GENESIS 18
創世記18章

And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on— since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.” And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.
アブラハムが日中暑い時間にテントのドアのところに座っていると、神がマムレの木の近くに現れた。アブラハムが目を上げると、神の前に3人のひとが立っていた。アブラハムは駆け寄り地にお辞儀して言った「神よ、もしお慈悲があるなら、あなたのしもべを通り過ぎないでください。み足をお洗いになられ木陰でお休みください、その間にパンを少々お持ちします、お召し上がりいただけますように、それからお立ちになられてもよいのではないかと存じます、せっかくお越しいただいたからには」と。「ほなそうしよう」と彼らは言われた。アブラハムはすぐにテントに入ってサラ（妻）に言った「まじ急いで！３セアの上等な小麦粉！こねてケーキにして」さらに家畜のところへ走って、やわらかく美味しい仔牛を1匹えらんで、料理人に渡した。アブラハムは凝乳、ミルク、仔牛を捧げた。彼らが食べるあいだ、そばにずっと立っていた。

【コメント】
日本はどちらかというと世界でも珍しい地理で
島国ゆえに水が豊富で亜熱帯でじめじめしがちですが
人類初期の文明が起こったのは聖書の舞台でもある
西アジアからインド北西部あたりとされています
あくまでも想像ですが、おそらく基本は乾燥していて
河川の近くだけ灌漑が可能で、たまによく氾濫します
考古学的に分かっている範囲では、たぶん
エジプトのナイル川、今のイスラエル辺り、シリア
メソポタミア、インダス川あたりの北西インド
さらに北の西部中央アジアあたりがそうです
まったく別の地域では、南米のアンデスあたりの文明圏
有名なマチュピチュとかのあたりも乾燥文明です
たぶん北米西部もそうですし
チュニジアやモロッコなど北アフリカ地中海も
中国の異民族とされたオルドス以北もきっと
日本ではあまり無い乾燥を前提とした生活地帯に
この聖書の生活はあります
なお聖書の世界は、さらに古いこの地域の歴史の
途中経過に出てきた民族と考えられます
宗教的にもっと古いイランのゾロアスターから
多くの影響を受けて成立していると言われます
日本人がこの地域の話を読むときには
例えばモンゴルあたりの生活をイメージすると
いいかなと提案です+とても暑い

さて、そういう移動式のテントの戸口に座っていた
アブラハムのもとに神が現れるが、なぜか前に3人いる
まだ誰なのか分からない
（このあと説明されるのかも読んでないので不明
神と合計で4人のはずが、３セアという単位のパンで
なお思い出したけど、たしか「種なしパン」の世界なので
たしか発酵させないパン、つまりこねてすぐ焼くので
すぐに料理にできるということなのかなと
どこかで出てきたら「種なし」の意味をぜひ考えてみたい
なのに最後の、凝乳、ミルク、仔牛に出てこないけど
ちなみに、現代日本語でパンとケーキは
甘いかどうかみたいなふわっとした区別だが
それほど気にしなくていいと思われる
歴史的に調べてみたら面白いかもしれないが
粉のこね方とか熱の加え方とかの
手順の違いなのではないかと思った
わざわざ現れておいて、立ち去るそぶりを見せる神
やっぱりとてもメンヘラで見てほしい神です

They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” The LORD said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” The LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
「妻サラはどこだい？」彼らは言った、アブラハムは「テントにいます」と言った。神は「来年もっかい来るけど、その頃サラは息子を生むよ」サラはそれを後ろで聞いてた。アブラハムもサラももう年で、サラにはもう月の日は来てなかった。なのでサラは心の中で笑って（もう年だし、これ以上の喜びなんてあるのかしら）と思った。神はアブラハムに言った「どうしてサラは笑って（もう年なのに子供なんて）と思ったのか。神に無理なことがあるとでも？ 約束したときに戻ってきて、来年の今頃ね、サラには子ができる」と。しかしサラは否定して言った「私は笑ってません」怖かったからだ。神は言った「いいや、たしかに笑ったね」

心の中もお見通し
わしにできないことがあるって？
力を見せてとにかく崇拝されたい

Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. The LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” Then the LORD said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know.”
人々はそこから出発し、ソドムを見下ろすところへ来た。アブラハムも見送りに一緒に来た。神は言った「これからわしがやろうとしていることを、アブラハムに隠す必要があろうか、アブラハムは間違いなく偉大で強い国となり、地上のすべての国家が彼において祝福されるというのに。私が彼を選んだのだから、彼が子供や家族に命令して正しいことと正義を行って神の道を守るのであり、ゆえに約束したものを彼に与えるであろう」また神は言った「ソドムとゴモラに対する抗議は大きく、彼らの罪は重いので、わしが降りて行って抗議のとおりかどうか見てこよう。もし違えばすぐ分かるさ」

相変わらず、神がセリフの中で自分のことを
the LORDとか、私とか、彼とか
混乱した呼び方をしたままですね
英語的には、ありえなくもないかな
かといって正しいというわけではない
急に出てくるソドムとゴモラ
たぶん滅ぼされるはずだけど
どういうことなんだろうか期待

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
ソドムのために仲裁するアブラハム

So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” And the LORD said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
人々はソドムへ向かって行ったが、アブラハムはまだ神の前にいた。神に近づいて言った「あなたは本当に、良い人と悪い人を一緒に滅ぼすのですか。もし町に良い人が50人いたら、それでも滅ぼしますか。良い人が悪い人と同じようになってしまい、そんなことはあなたらしくありません！ 全地上の審判者は、正義を行うはずですよね」神は言った「もし良い人が50人いたら町を救おう」

【コメント】
私の断片的な記憶では
神は正しいことをするはずというのは
人間の勝手な期待だと思う

Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
アブラハムは答えて言った「私は神に話しかけてしまいました。私など塵や灰にすぎません。もし50人に5人足りなかったら、あなたは滅ぼしますか」「45人なら滅ぼさない」「もし40人だったら？」「滅ぼさない」「どうか怒らないでほしいのですが申し上げます、もし30人だったら？」「滅ぼさない」「申し上げます、もし20人だったら」「滅ぼさない」「怒らないでほしいのですがもう一度、もし10人だったら」「滅ぼさない」神はアブラハムと話し終え、去った。アブラハムも帰った。

というかやっぱり良い人は
相当少なそうなのは見えてきた
それなのになぜ急にソドムの弁護を始めたのか
ソドムを滅ぼしたところに
アブラハムの国ができるんじゃないのか？
偉大な国となると言われて
急に責任感に目覚めたのか
果たして良い人は10人いるのか
