Internship@Harlem Link Charter School 3 -卒業後の進路から相性を探る-

さて今回はインターンシップの連載３回目！過去の投稿はこちらからご覧になれます。

1. Start to Finish Project

前回紹介したとおり、ＮＹＣにある中学校と高校を５段階のQualityにランク分けするという仕事をまずしました。

その次のステップとして、卒業生の進路状況を分析します。

すなわち、「わが校（小学校）の卒業生のうち、Ａ中学校に行っている子達は、どんな質の高校に通っているか？それは同程度にランクされているＢ中学校と異なるのか？」といった具合です。

As mentioned earlier, I categoried middle schools and high schools in NYC based on some indicators (created a kind of ranking composed of five categories). This time, as a next step, I analyzed a middle to high school trajectory.
That is, what type of high schools are our alumni attending after graduating from a particular middle school? How does it differ from one middle school to another?

２００５年にできた学校で、規模もそこまで大きくない（４００人弱）ので、サンプル数があまりそろわないのが悩ましいところですが、いくつか面白いことも見えてきました

例えば、以下のような点です。

・ランク上は同じEliteと分類されるＡ中学校とＢ中学校とでは、明らかにわが校の卒業生の進学する高校のレベルが異なっている。（＝その学校のsupportive environmentのレベルと関係がある？）

・ランク上ではEliteとなっている中学校で、6-12th Grade（すなわち中高一貫）なのに、そのまま高校に上がっていないわが校の卒業生が一定程度いる。つまり、学校自体の教育レベルは高いのだが、それに生徒が順応できていない可能性あり。

Although we have a limited number of samples as this school was established in 2005, there are some interesting takeaways.
・Some middle schools categoried as the same "Elite" ones have different trajectories, possibly depending on supportive environment of this school.
・Although some 6-12 Grade middle schools are ranked as "Elite", some of our alumni are dropping out of this school, which might indicate they have difficulty adapting to its competitive environment.

実は中学校ですが最大１２校まで受験でき、自分の居住学区か小学校のある学区の所にしか出願できません。

さらに、１２校を優先順位をつけて出すのですが、いくつかの学校は生徒・親が自分の学校にどの程度のPriority（何番目にしたか）を審査の考慮に入れます。最終的にはPlacementは１つの中学校しか提示されませんので、戦略的な出願が大事となる訳です。

このための材料として私の分析しているデータが有用になるといいなと思っています。

A student can apply to up to 12 middle schools, either located in the same school district as their residency or their elementary school. In addition, each applicant ranks these middle schools, but some middle schools take into account how their own schools are ranked. Because NYC DOE only offers one placement, strategic advice to students and parents, by using this data, is needed.

2. Classroom Visit

・・・とまあ難しい（？）話はこのくらいにしてKindergartenのクラスに潜入。クラスサイズは少し小さめで18人程度。先生は常にいる方は１人ですが随時サポートの方が１～２名入ってきます。
Aside from complicated analyses, I popped in the kindergarten classroom! One plus one to two teachers vs roughly 18 children.

こちらは、Pre-KのクラスがもうすぐKinderに上がるので、そのstep-up ceremonyで歌とダンスの練習をしているところです！
Pre-K class is practicing singing a song and dancing for the step-up ceremony to kindergarten.

こないだの６月８日（木）はField Dayという一日中グラウンドを使える日（通常は同じCo-locatedの３つの公立学校とシェア）ということで、こんな巨大なアトラクションが設置！
みな無邪気に楽しんでいました！！
Last Thursday was a Field Day, when our school can use two grounds at our disposal (usually sharing with other three traditional public schools). They enjoyed climing up this huge attraction!!

3. Alumni Visit

あとこの日は初年度の卒業生（２０１０年）の１人がＳＵＮＹ（ニューヨーク州立大学）に受かったということで学校に訪問に来てくれたのですが、それがほぼ全校生徒にグラウンドで紹介されていました。
本人にとっても、今の子供達にとっても良いモチベーションになりますよね。

Also, one of the alumna who was accepted by SUNY visited at that day, introduced and applaused by all children and staff! Would be good motivation for both the alumna and current students.

このインターンもとうとう後２日で終わりですが、最後まで色々学んできたいと思います！
I can't believe I have only two more days, but would love to learn as much as I can!!
