School Visit in NYC

The other day, we went to an independent elementary school in Manhattan!
先日は、マンハッタンにある私立小学校に訪問してきました！

1. 訪問の経緯

今回は、模擬国連で日本について調べているので、日本人の方から直接政策について話を聞きたいということで、ＳＩＰＡに在籍している日本人２人とともに行ってきました(*^o^*)
We (I and two SIPA Japanese students) are asked to talk about Japan's current situation and public policies, for this school is now doing Model UN project and students are searching information about Japan.

クラスは１２人程度で小学校４～６年生が混在。それぞれテーマ毎に政策を調べてきて、色々な質問を投げかけてきました。
The class is composed of about twelve students, from 4-6 grades. They divided their research into some topics and threw questions regarding their research.

2. どんな内容？

１時間半程度でしたが、教育、女性の活躍、経済、農業、防衛、銃規制、ＰＫＯ、国連などなど多岐にわたるディスカッションをさせてもらいました。
We had a discussion about education, women's empowerment, economy, agriculture, security, gun control, Peace-Keeping Operations, United Nations etc over one hour and half.

主に出た質問としては、
・日本とアメリカの学校はどう違うのか？（クラスサイズ、先生の立場、生徒の積極性）
・財政状況が厳しい中、どのように予算を重点配分しているのか？
・日本でもしテロが起こっても銃規制は貫けるのか？
・なぜ日本は対人地雷を使わないのか？
・常任理事国になるためにどのような働きかけをしているのか？
などなど、小学生から出てくるか？という鋭い質問ばかり。。

バランス良く３人が答えられたからいいものの、自分ひとりではとても難しかったです・・・。

Main questions are as follows; very acute ones.
・How different are Japan's schools from that in the U.S. (class size, teachers' position, activeness of students)
・How does the Japanese government prioritize on limited budget?
・Will Japan continue to refrain from using gun even if terrorism happens in this country?
・Why doesn't Japan use anti-personnel mines?
・What efforts is Japan making to become P5 in UNSC?
I could not respond to all of these questions without others' help.

3. 感じたこと

色々と話をしてまず感じたのは、先生がファシリテーターに徹していること。

そして、生徒一人一人がその場だけの質問ではなく、しっかりとリサーチに基づいて質問を考えていること。

日本の高校生でも、ここまで議論するのは難しいんじゃないかな。。

ちなみにこの模擬国連は先生の個人的な熱意によるものとのこと。
数ヶ月ベースで最後は実際にプレゼンまでするとのことです。

What impressed me was that the teacher did not interrupt too much, she served as a facilitator.
In addition, students prepared some questions based on their research, rather than coming up promptly.
I think that even high school students in Japan cannot have a clear opinion or consciousness like them.
By the way, this Model UN is due to the personal passion of the teacher. They spent some months in this project and at last they will make a presentation.

これがアメリカの教育事情一般というにはほど遠いと思いますが、世界の最先端の教育を垣間見た気がしました。

そして、自分ももっと知識人にならねばという思いを新たにしました・・・！

I felt like having a glimpse of cutting-edge education, although it cannot be generalized to education in the U.S. in general.
Moreover, I have to learn a lot more to be more knowledgeable!
