五輪アスリートと信仰 － 走ると神が喜ばれていると感じる。（When I run, I feel His pleasure.）エリック・リデル牧師の台詞に共感するシドニー・マクラフリン選手 － 1924年と2024年のパリオリンピック（炎のランナー・最後のランナー）

Let me start off by saying, what and honor it is to be able to represent not only my country, but also the kingdom of God. What I have in Christ is far greater than what I have or don’t have in life. I pray my journey may be a clear depiction of submission and obedience to God. Even when it doesn’t make sense, even when it doesn’t seem possible. He will make a way out of no way. Not for my own gratification, but for His glory. I have never seen God fail in my life. In anyone’s life for that matter. Just because I may not win every race, or receive every one of my heart’s desires, does not mean God had failed. His will is PERFECT. And He has prepared me for a moment such as this. That I may use the gifts He has given me to point all the attention back to Him. 🇺🇸❤️

Sydney McLaughlin (-Levrone) has made her Christian testimony widely known through numerous interviews and her book Far Beyond Gold: Running from Fear to Faith.

“I credit all that I do to God. He’s given me a gift, he’s given me a drive to just want to continue to improve upon myself, and I have a platform and I want to use it to glorify him,” she said at Thursday's post-race press conference in response to an NPR reporter’s question. “So whenever I step on the track, it’s always the prayer of ‘God, let me be the vessel in which You’re glorified, whatever the result is’—how I conduct myself, how I carry myself, not just how I perform. So it’s just freedom in knowing that regardless of what happens, he’s going to get the praise through me. That’s why I do what I do.”

Far Beyond Gold: Running from Fear to Faith

I began to resonate with the famous words from the movie Chariots of Fire, which tells the story of Eric Liddell, a Christian sprinter and missionary: “God made me fast. And when I run, I feel his pleasure.” That’s an amazing thought. He takes pleasure in us doing what we were made for. And win, lose, or draw, to run the race well is to glorify him.

何か理由があって神は僕を造られたが、早い足も与えてくださった。走る時、僕は神の喜びを感じるんだ。

You came to see a race today. See someone win. Happened to be me. But I want you to do more than just watch a race. I want you to take part in it.

I want to compare faith to running in a race. It's hard, requires concentration of will, energy of soul. You experience elation when the winner breaks the tape -- 'specially if you've got a bet on it. But how long does that last? You go home. Maybe your dinner's burnt. Maybe, maybe you haven't got a job. So who am I to say, "believe," "have faith," in the face of life's realities?

I would like to give you something more permanent, but I can only point the way. I have no formula for winning the race. Everyone runs in her own way, or his own way.

And where does the power come from to see the race to its end?

From within.

Jesus said, "Behold, the kingdom of God is within you." "If, with all your hearts ye truly seek Me, ye shall ever surely find Me" -- if you commit yourself to the love of Christ.

And THAT is how you run the straight race.

ミュンヘン・オリンピックと同様のテロ事件に見舞われるのではないかと心配されたパリ・オリンピックでしたが、日本代表選手の皆さんも数多くのメダルを獲得して、日曜日（日本では月曜日の朝）に無事に幕を閉じました。

閉会式終盤のＬＡ２８宣伝コーナーでは（映画館のスクリーン上に映る姿より老けた）トム・クルーズが（Ｈ.Ｅ.Ｒとダニエル・シーザーが、アメリカ国歌に続いて、ギターと鍵盤ギターで演奏したＢＧＭの冒頭にラロ・シフリン作曲のミッション・インポッシブルの主題が聴こえた後）イーサン・ハントのようなライブ・アクションで競技場に現れ、オリンピック旗をパリからロスアンジェルスへ運びました。このようなパフォーマンスは映画の宣伝には役立つかもしれませんが、サイエントロジーの伝道に資することはなさそうです。

さて、平成から令和にかけても、競技に先立って神社や寺に参拝したり、競技会場にお守りを持参する国内のアスリートは少なくないと思いますが、受験や試合や困ったときにのみ神仏に頼る昨今の日本とは異なり、海外では試合の前後や最中にアスリートが祈りを捧げる場面をよく目にします。例えば、サッカー選手は．．．

2012年に開催されたロンドン・オリンピックの開会式で、故エリザベス女王とダニエル・クレイグによる寸劇に加えて

サイモン・ラトルが指揮するロンドン交響楽団による『炎のランナー』（Chariots of Fire、1981年、イギリス映画）の（ヴァンゲリスが作曲した）主題曲の演奏にＭｒ. ビーン（ローワン・アトキンソン）がシンセサイザー奏者として登場した場面を覚えていらっしゃる方は多いと思いますが

『炎のランナー』の主人公たちは１００年前（1924年）に開催されたパリ・オリンピックで短距離走に挑みました。（尚、1896年にアテネで始まった近代オリンピック（オリンピアード競技大会）は、１９世紀最後の年（世紀末）である1900年にはクーベルタン男爵 ピエール・ド・フレディの故郷であるパリで開催されました。同じ年にはパリで５回目の万国博覧会も開催されました。）

若干の（一部で批判された）脚色を除き、史実に沿って、ハロルド・エイブラハムス（父親がユダヤ人、１００ｍ走で金メダル、４×１００ｍリレーで銀メダル）とエリック・リデル（スコットランド人、ロンドン伝道会（プロテスタント）の宣教師、４００ｍ走で金メダル、２００ｍ走で銅メダル）の若き日が劇中で描かれました。走ることと信仰が同義であったエリック・リデルが安息日にレース（７月６日（日曜日）に予選と準々決勝、７月７日（月曜日）に準決勝と決勝）が行われた１００ｍ走への出場を拒否してから１世紀を経て

東京オリンピック（４００ｍハードル走で金メダル、４×４００ｍリレーで金メダル）でも、パリ・オリンピック（４００ｍハードル走で金メダル、４×４００ｍリレーで金メダル）でも、無敵を誇ったシドニー・マクラフリン（＝レヴロン）選手は、自身の信仰についてインスタグラムで発信し続けています。

In much of my life, I felt like I had to balance two different people. On the track, I had to care only about being successful, while in my relationship with Andre, I had to be willing to sacrifice for him. When competing, my objective was to leave others in my wake, but while I was with my family, I was called to put them before myself. And to succeed as a professional track athlete, I had to be aggressive, a killer competitor. Yet off the track, I wanted to be humble, gentle, and kind. The Bible talks about having a meek and gentle spirit, which 1 Peter 3:4 says is precious in the sight of God. That sounded great. Problem was, how do you do that one minute, then the next want nothing more than to be the best in the world and destroy everyone you compete against? When I became a Christian, I knew I wanted to stop living like a “double- minded man” (or woman, in this case), as James 1:8 describes. That kind of inconsistency between my thoughts and behavior did not honor God and, to be honest, was exhausting to live with.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to figure all this out on my own. Now there were other believers in my life I could turn to. Between the NFL Bible study Andre had invited me to a few months earlier and another Bible study Andre started separately, there was plenty of counsel to hear from (Proverbs 15:22). Andre and I spent hours talking through my internal dilemma. Through those conversations, I began to realize that I didn’t have to live with my version of a split personality: a kind, soft- spoken, humble- minded person off the track and a killer competitor on it. Both were consistent with the Christian life.

How? The reason starts with a fundamental truth about my newfound identity. As a Christian, I now existed to glorify God (1 Corinthians 6:19–20; Matthew 5:16). At the beginning of 2021, I was learning all the ways my life wasn’t about me. It was about showing the world God’s power, wisdom, kindness, love, and forgiveness. There were a bunch of different ways to do that. Off the track, I could do that by serving others, putting their needs before mine, and being excited when God did a remarkable work in their lives (Philippians 2:3–4). On the track, I glorified God by running with all my mind and body. I honored him when I gave every scrap of energy I had to the task at hand. Because this was the gift God gave me to use, and by using it to the best of my ability and humbly redirecting the attention to him, he would be glorified.

I began to resonate with the famous words from the movie Chariots of Fire, which tells the story of Eric Liddell, a Christian sprinter and missionary: “God made me fast. And when I run, I feel his pleasure.” That’s an amazing thought. He takes pleasure in us doing what we were made for. And win, lose, or draw, to run the race well is to glorify him.

４００ｍハードル走で自身の世界記録を破ったこのアスリートは、フランスがそれを知ったらカルトと呼ぶであろう教会の信者だ。そして彼女はそれを声高に宣言している。
