August 2, 2024: In Lovely France （おフランスでは）
France is now full of the excitement of the Olympic Games. As long as I see on TV, French people seem to enjoy and be very excited about them.
On the other hand, France is usually on holiday in August. I do not know exactly what is going on in France these days. But when I did business with a French customer, French people usually stopped what they were doing every day and went on holiday in August. Not only did the schools go on holiday, but the offices also closed. They would not come back to school or to work until September. So, it was often been said that no French people was in Paris in August, and that Paris was empty in August. So, I am very interested in how many French people are now in Paris to see or support the Games.
I was very surprised when I first found this out on business. I was reminded of this when I missed orders from the French customer in August. The customer had placed orders with me every month until July, but did not do it in August. I was told by my colleague that this was the normal way of their business, because they were on holiday. I was at a loss, but I could not do anything with it. I only had to wait for the orders in September. It was also the same in other Latin nations, Italy and Spain. They also went on holiday in August and closed their offices. They also did not place orders in August.
That was my first culture shock when I got involved in the business for Europe. I could not imagine that the whole country would go on holiday for a month. It was the exact opposite of the Japanese way of life. At that time, I was often told that being absent from work was a bad thing. So, I used to work hard day and night. I used to work until around 21:00 p.m. almost every working day without being absent.But now, times have changed in Japan, too. Most Japanese companies have tried to improve the way their employees work. And indeed, they have made significant improvements.
But they, and the nation, still need to improve further. Now, Japan is hit by extreme heat in the summer. So, it is the time for Japan to stop most business activities and go on holiday for the whole of August, as France and Italy do. This could be the beginning of creating a new Japan.
フランスは今、オリンピックの興奮に包まれています。テレビで見る限り、フランスの人たちはオリンピックを楽しみ、熱狂しているようです。
一方、フランスは例年、8月になるとバカンスに入ります。このところのフランスの状況は、よくわかっていません。でも、ボクがフランスのお客さんとビジネスをしていたとき、フランスの人たちはたいてい、8月になるバカンスに入っていました。学校が休みになるだけでなく、オフィスも休みです。学校も仕事も、９月なるまで元に戻りませんでした。だから、8月のパリにはフランス人はいないとか、8月のパリは空っぽだと言われたものです。なので、今、どれだけのフランスの人がパリでオリンピックを見たり、応援したりしているのかが気になります。
仕事で初めてこのことを知ったときは驚きでした。それを思い知らされたのは、フランスのお客さんから、8月の注文をもらえなかったときです。このお客さんは7月までは毎月発注してくれていたのに、8月は発注してくれなかったのです。同僚から、フランスは今、休暇中で、これが普通と教えられました。途方に暮れましたが、どうしようもなかったです。9月の注文を待つしかありませんでした。他のラテン系の国、イタリアやスペインでも同じでした。彼らも、8月になると休みに入り、オフィスも休みでした。また、8月の注文もありませんでした。
これが、ヨーロッパのビジネスにかかわったときの最初のカルチャーショックでした。国全体が1カ月も休暇に入るなんて想像できませんでした。その頃の日本では、正反対でした。当時は、仕事を休むことは悪いことだと言われ、昼も夜も働き詰めでした。ほぼ毎日、夜21時ごろまで休まず働いていたものです。
でも、今は日本も時代が変わりました。ほとんどの会社が従業員の働き方を改善しようとしています。そして実際、大きな改善がなされてきました。それでも、さらなる改善が必要です。今、日本は夏の酷暑に見舞われています。そこで、フランスやイタリアのように、日本も８月の１か月間まるまる、ほとんどの経済活動を止めてみてはどうでしょうか？ それが新しい日本を作るきっかけになるかもしれません。
