April 22, 2024: Untranslatable Words （翻訳できないことば）

The other day, I have found an interesting book on the internet. And I was fortunate to be able to borrow it from a public library in my town. It is by Ella Frances Sanders and has the wordy title of An Illustrated Compendium of Untranslatable Words Around the World. It simply looks like a picture book for children, but it is not. It is the book of significance. It lists a lot of words from many languages which are not easy to translate in one or a few words into other languages.
For example, it lists a few Japanese words like KOMOREBI. It is, for sure, very hard to translate the word into other languages in a few words. I would need more words to translate it into English. And I would say that the word describes the scene where a thin ray of sunlight leaks into a forest.
Like this, the book lists a lot of untranslatable words. Among them were the two words, which interested me a lot.
One is an Icelandic word, TIMA. The word seems to mean in English that we are not ready to spend a lot of time and money on a specific thing despite that we can afford to do so.
The other is an Italian word, COMMUOVERE. It seems to describe the feeling in English of being deeply touched and stirred by a story that moves us to tears. The word is a verb, and it is translated in the Cambridge English dictionary as simply to stir, touch or move. The translation is close to the description in Sander’s book. But Sanders' has a background so I can understand the meaning more deeply.
I manage to understand both words in English and Japanese, but would like to see how they are used in a story or dialogue. Help me!

先日、インターネットで面白い本を見つけました。そして幸運にも、ボクの町の公共図書館で借りることができました。エラ・フランシス・サンダース氏の『翻訳できない世界のことば』という長いタイトル（英語では）の本です。一見、子供向けの絵本のように見えなますが、大違いで、有意義な本です。多くの言語のなかから、一言や二言では他の言語に翻訳しにくい言葉がたくさん掲載されています。
例えば、日本語では「こもれび」のような言葉がいくつか扱われています。確かに、この言葉を一言や二言で他の言語に翻訳するのは非常に難しいです。英語に訳すにはもっと多くの言葉が必要になります。ボクなら、森の中に一筋の細い陽光が漏れている情景を表す言葉と説明するでしょう。
このように、この本にはたくさんの言葉が掲載されています。その中で、ボクがとても興味を持った単語が2つありました。ひとつはアイスランド語の「TIMA」。この言葉は、英語では「余裕があるにもかかわらず、特定のことに多くの時間とお金を費やす準備ができていない」という意味のようです。
もうひとつは、イタリア語の「COMMUOVERE」です。英語にすると、涙をさそう物語に触れたときに、深く感動し、心を揺さぶられる感覚を表しているようです。この単語は動詞で、ケンブリッジの英語辞典では単に「感激する、感動する」としか訳されていません。サンダースの本の説明に近いですが、彼女の本は背景説明があり、この言葉の意味をより深く理解することができます。
英語でも日本語でもなんとか理解できますが、物語や対話の中で実際にどのように使われるのか見てみたいです。誰か助けてください！
