June 6, 2024: Fountain Pen （万年筆）

A few days ago, I broke my favourite fountain pen, a Farber-Castell. I bent the pen nib when I dropped it on the floor. For a month, I had had a bad feeling that something bad would happen to it. And I was afraid that one day, I would break it. For the month, I had come to drop the cap to the floor very often. I did so at least once a few days. So, I tried not to drop it as much as possible, but I failed to. And, at last, I dropped the pen to the floor without the cap and bent the pen nib. I can see at a glance that the nib is bent. I need to fix it to use. But I gave it up instead of fixing it. I do not know why, but I was not frustrated with it as much as before. I was not ready to fix it because, in the past, I had fixed it twice at my expense. I was also a little tired of it and have been tempted to buy a new pen. So, I believe that the pen was on its last leg.
In addition to the pen, I have two other fountain pens, a CROSS and a Waterman. I am now using the CROSS mainly. It was my favourite before I began to use the Farber-Castell one. I bought it about thirty years ago at a shop at Heathrow Airport. It has been about ten years since I last used it. For now, it works very well and satisfies me. But I know that it will give out soon from my experiences. So, I had better hurry to find a new pen.

　数日前、お気に入りのファーバーカステルの万年筆を壊してしまいました。床に落としてペン先を曲げてしまったのです。この１か月、万年筆に悪いことが起こるのではないかと嫌な予感がしていました。そして、いつか壊してしまうのではないかと不安でした。この１か月、万年筆のキャップを床に落とすことが多くなりました。少なくとも数日に一度は落としていました。だから、なるべく落とさないようにしようと思っていたのですが、止められませんでした。そしてついに、キャップがないペンを床に落とし、ペン先を曲げてしまいました。ペン先が曲がっているのは一目でわかるくらいなので、修理しないと使えません。でも、修理はあきらめました。理由はわからないのですが、ペンが壊れても前ほど悔しさがありませんでした。というのも、過去に2度、自費で修理したからです。また、このペンに少し飽きていて、新しいペンを買いたいとも思っていたのです。なので、このペンは寿命を迎えたのだと思います。
　このペンの他に、クロスとウォーターマンの2本の万年筆を持っています。今は主にクロスを使っています。ファーバーカステルの万年筆を使い始める前のお気に入りでした。約30年前にヒースロー空港の売店で買ったものです。最後に使ったのは10年ほど前でした。今のところ、とてもよく書け、とても満足しています。でも、今までの経験からすぐにダメになることはわかっています。なので、新しいペン探しを急ぎます。
