Fictional Story: Eccentrics -3 （架空の話：変わり者たち(3)）

After he said that he was going out to sketch today, he spoke to his sister.
'I'm going to the sports park soon to sketch. Do you come with me?’
‘Yes, I will go with you. I have nothing to do and have a lot of free time. So, I can kill time, doing something in the park. Thank you for your invitation.’
Then, he took out what he needed to sketch, such as his sketchbook, drawing board and crayons. And, he spoke to his sister. ‘Let’s go.’
Originally, he intended to go by bike but did not. His belongings were too big to carry them by bike. So, he walked to the park with his sister. It was 15 to 20 minutes walk. It was a hot day, and sometimes, he spoke to his sister.
‘Are you OK? Don’t you have anything wrong with you? Do not hesitate to tell me if there is anything wrong with you.'
‘Yes, I know. You do not have to worry. I am OK. For now, I have nothing wrong with me.’
They were headed for the park, chatting about small things.
In about 15 minutes, they arrived at the park safely. As soon as they arrived, He said to his sister, ‘I have to sketch somewhere in the park and need time. So, please play alone for a while.’
Then, he began to look for where to sketch. The park had a number of sports fields in the woods, such as a baseball stadium, a football pitch, a rugby field, an athletics field and a gym. So, it gave him a lot of options to sketch. If he had been serious about choosing where to sketch, he could not have chosen it in one day, The park had so many options that he should have needed a lot of time to choose. He should have taken more time to check each field and stadium. But, far from it, he chose the place to sketch in a few minutes after he began to look for it. He decided to sketch a scene of the rugby pitch in the woods. It was closest to the gate he entered.

What was in his mind when he chose it?

Probably, he must have said in his mind,
‘It is so hot today that I cannot take the time just to sketch. Otherwise, I will get sick. So, I have to start quickly and finish sketching at the earliest.'

From the beginning, he had not intended to take plenty of time to choose the scene. He came there reluctantly. He was filled with the desire to finish it and go home as soon as possible. So, he had no idea to check other fields and stadiums in the park. Nor had he any idea to find the best place to sketch. Anything was good to him. The most important thing for him was to choose the scene at his earliest convenience. So, the moment he found the rugby field at the gate, he picked it. (To be continued. See you next week!)

　少年は、「今日、スケッチに出かける」言った後、妹に声をかけました。
「もうすぐ運動公園にスケッチに行くけど、一緒に来る？」
「うん、一緒に行く。何もすることがないし、暇なんで。公園にいけば、何かして時間をつぶせる。誘ってくれてありがとう。」
その後、彼は、スケッチブック、画板、色鉛筆などの必要なものを取り出し、妹に「行こか」と声をかけました。
当初は、自転車で行くつもりだったのですが、止めました。荷物が大きすぎて自転車では邪魔だったのです。そこで、妹と二人で公園まで歩きました。歩いて15分から20分です。暑い日だったので、ときどき妹に声をかけていました。
「大丈夫？ 調子悪いところはないか？ 何かあったらすぐに言うてな。」
「うん。心配ない。大丈夫。今のところ、どこも悪くないで。」
二人は他愛もない話をしながら公園に向かいました。
15分ほどで、無事に公園に到着。到着するやいなや、彼は妹に状況を説明します。「公園の中をスケッチするので、時間がかかる。その間、しばらく一人で遊んでてくれる？」
　そう言うと、彼は、スケッチする場所を探し始めました。公園には、野球場、サッカー場、ラグビー場、陸上競技場、体育館など、たくさんの運動場が森の中にありました。おかげで、スケッチする場所はたくさんありました。スケッチする場所を真剣に選ぶのであれば、その日のうちに、場所を決めれなかったはずです。たくさんの選択肢の中から選ぶのであれば、たっぷり時間がかかったはずです。彼は、たっぷり時間をかけて、各競技場やスタジアムをひとつひとつチェックすべきでした。ところが、彼は場所を探し始めて、わずか数分で決めてしまったのです。森の中のラグビー場の風景をスケッチすることにしました。公園に入ってすぐのところにあったのが、ラグビー場だったからです。

その場所を選んだとの彼の心の中はいかほどに？

おそらく、こう言っていたに違いありません、
「今日は暑いから、スケッチしている暇はない。そうせんと、病気になるわ。なので、とっとと初めて、とっとと終わらせよ。」と。

最初から、長い時間をかけて場所をを選ぶつもりはなかったのです。もともと、ここにはしぶしぶそこに来ので、早く終わらせて帰りたいという気持ちでいっぱいでした。だから、公園内の他の競技場やスタジアムをチェックする気は毛頭なかったのです。スケッチに最適な場所を探すという発想もありませんでした。つまり、何でもよかったのです。一番大事なことは、一刻も早く場所を選ぶことでした。だから、入ってすぐのところにあったラグビー場を見た瞬間、それに決めたのです。
