October 13, 2023: Kakinotane for Salad（サラダに柿の種）
Japan has a wide variety of snacks, and one of the most popular ones is the rice snack. They also have a lot of varieties and the most popular is the one with a slim shape, which is called Kakinotane. The largest producer of the snack, Kameda Seika, has been running CMs for the snack on TV all the time. In the past, it ran CMs with the eye of repeating the name of the snack, but it seems to have changed its strategy. Now, it offers new ideas to enjoy the snack, including the idea of sprinkling the snack on salads.
In fact, I tried the idea about 10 years ago. At that time, I suddenly conceived of the same idea, but with no success. First, I tried to have the snack as a salad topping and sprinkled it, as it was, on a salad. But it did not taste good. The snack was too big for me to enjoy the salad. It also sometimes gave me a pain in my mouth. Both ends of the snack are sharp and stuck in my mouth. Then, I changed the way to use the snack. As I did before, I sprinkled it on a salad and then, on top of that, I put a dressing in order to soften the snack. Then, it tasted terribly bad. It absorbed so much water that it became too soft.
I do not know if the company changed the specs of the snack for their new serving ideas. But if they do not change it, the snack is not good for salads. The snack should be smaller and not have sharp ends for a salad.
日本には、たくさんのお菓子があります。その中で、米菓も人気です。米菓も様々ありますが、一番人気があるのが柿の種という細長いものです。このお菓子の最大手メーカーが亀田製菓で、同社は、ずっと柿の種のCMをテレビに流しています。以前は、柿の種の名前を繰り返すCMが多かったのですが、最近は、戦略を変えたようです。今は、CMで柿の種の新しい楽しみ方を提案しています。その一つが柿の種をサラダに振りかけるというものです。
実は、10年以上前に、これに挑戦したことがあります。当時、同じアイデアが思い浮かんだのですが、うまくいきませんでした。最初に、柿の種をサラダトッピングにしようと、柿の種をサラダにそのまま振りかけました。でも、おいしくなかったです。柿の種が大きすぎて、サラダを楽しめなかったのです。また、時々、柿の種で口の中に痛みを感じました。柿の種の両端がとがっているため、口の中で刺さってしまったのです。そこで、使い方を変えてみました。まず、前回同様に柿の種をサラダに振りかけ、更に、ドレッシングを振りかけてみました。そしたら、めちゃくちゃまずかったです。柿の種がドレッシングの水分を吸ってしまい、ふにゃふにゃになってしまったのです。
同社が新しい食べ方のために柿の種の仕様変更をしたのかどうかはわかりませんが、以前のままだと、柿の種はサラダには向いていないと思います。サイズを小さくして、丸みをつけるなどの工夫が必要だと思います。
