The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup is now in the knockout stages. Japan played and beat Norway as I had expected. They play Sweden today. I really hope that they will beat Sweden as they did Norway to get to the semi-finals.
The Cup has rarely been run on TV. It is only broadcast by NHK. And none of the commercial TV stations care about and even cover the success in the news. The commercial channels seem to be busy with other sports. TV Asahi was busy with the World Aquatics Championships. Nippon TV station is now very busy with the 2024 Rugby World Cup, which will take place in September. In the runup to the Cup, Rugby Japan played Fiji. It, by chance, took place just after the football match between Japan and Norway on the same day. As it was broadcast by Nippon TV. I watched it. But the result was a disaster. Japan suffered a crushing defeat to Fiji. It was like watching a video of Japan’s match against Samoa. It seems to me that Japan is not as strong as they were at the 2019 World Cup. I cannot have high expectations for their World Cup in September for now. I hope that they will rebuild the team to be strong enough to play the rugby powers in September.
Everything always has its ups and downs. August 5, 2023, was the day I witnessed it. Five years ago, Rugby Japan was at its peak and Japan's women's football team was in the doldrums. But now, the footballers have turned the tables on the rugby men. The same is true of the swimmers. Japan’s swimming team is also now in the doldrums. They failed to win a single gold medal at Fukuoka's World Aquatics Championships.
サッカー女子ワールドカップもノックアウトステージに入りました。日本は、期待通り、ノルウェーを破りました。今日は、スウェーデンと対決です。勝って、ベスト4に進出してもらいたいものです。
ところで、今回の大会は、日本ではほとんどテレビ中継がありません。NHKだけが中継し、民放はこの活躍を気にも止めず、ニュースにすらしていません。民放は、ほかのスポーツに忙しそうです。テレビ朝日は世界水泳に、日テレは9月に開催されるラグビーワールドカップに精を出しているようです。ワールドカップの前哨戦として、日本はフィジーと対戦しました。ところが偶然にも、その日は、女子サッカーワールドカップの日本対ノルウェー戦と同じ日に行われました。この試合は日本テレビが放送したので、ボクも見ました。でも、結果は悲惨なものでした。日本は完敗です。まるで、サモア戦のビデオをの再現ようのでした。個人的には、今のチームは2019年のワールドカップの頃ほど強くないように思えます。そのため、9月のワールドカップに大きな期待を持てません。９月の大会までに、チームを再建し、強豪と対等に渡り合えるようになって欲しいです。
何事も、常に、いい時もあれば悪い時もあります。8月5日はまさにそれを目の当たりにしました。５年前は、ラグビージャパンは最高潮で、女子サッカーチームはどん底でした。ところが、今や立場が逆転しています。同じことは水泳にも言えます。水泳もいまはどん底です。福岡の世界水泳では、金メダルを一個の取れませんでした。
