I suddenly recalled the bridges that are hard to see in Japan. It was when I lived in the Netherlands that I found and crossed them. The country has a famous wooden lifting bridge, the Skinny Bridge, which was first built in 1961 and has been renovated many times ever since. The most notable point of the bridge is the fact that the central part is opened and lifted. I do not know if the engineering was invented in the Netherlands or not. But when I was in the country, I found and crossed several bridges with the engineering. It was when I took a day trip by car to Hindeloopen, a city in the northern part of the country, that I found and crossed the bridge for the first time. I crossed a lot of bridges on the way to the city, but they had never been lifted up and opened. However, on the way back from the city, I finally found a bridge being lifted and opened in the middle. When I was driving on a motorway, I suddenly ran into a traffic jam. At first, I thought that there might have been a car accident, but it was not. Other drivers around me got out of their cars and took a breath or smoked. So I also got out of my car and was smoking. Then, suddenly, a huge asphalt slab was lifted and stopped in front of me. That was a part of a bridge and then, I learnt that some Dutch bridges were sometimes lifted and opened to pass boats and vessels. As you can imagine, such bridges were so heavy that they were lifted and opened very slowly. It looked like a spectacular show.
Japan has a lot of bridges, some of which are movable, but it has no lifting ones. The difference in the types of bridges between Japan and the Netherlands may come from cultural differences.
ふと思い出したのが、日本ではなかなか見られない橋のことです。その橋に出会ったのは、オランダに住んでいたときでした。オランダには有名が橋があります。マヘレの跳ね橋です。この橋は、木製の橋で、1961年に最初に建設され、それ以降、何度も改修されてきました。この橋の最大の特徴は、中央部が持ち上げられて開くことです。この技術がオランダで発明されたかどうかはわかりません。でも、オランダにいたときは、この技術を使った橋をいくつか見かけ、渡りました。北部の街・ヒンデローペンに車で日帰りで行ったとき、初めてこの技術を使った橋を渡りました。この街へ向かった時は、たくさんの橋を渡りましたが、一度も橋が持ち上がり、開くのを見ませんでした。でも、街から帰る途中に、ついに橋が持ち上がり、開くのを見ました。高速道路を運転していたら、突然渋滞に巻き込まれました。最初は交通事故かと思いましたが、そうではありませんでした。ボクの周りの他のドライバーは車から降りて、息抜きをしたり、タバコを吸ったりしていました。それでボクも車から降りてタバコを吸いました。すると突然、巨大なアスファルトの板が持ち上げられ、目の前で止まったのです。それが、橋の一部だったのです。この時に、オランダの橋は、船を通すために、時々持ち上がって、開くことを知りました。ご想像のとおり、橋は非常に重いので、持ち上げられて開くのが非常にゆっくりです。壮大なショーを見ているようでした。
日本にもたくさんの橋があります。そのうちのいくつかは可動式ですが、跳ね橋はありません。日本とオランダの橋の種類の違いは、文化の違いから来ているのかもしれません。
