June 1, 2026: Turbulence （乱気流）

The other day, I heard on the news that a flight had experienced severe turbulence. The flight, which left London and was heading for Singapore, suddenly ran into air turbulence over Thailand. As a result, it sent a British passenger to his death. It made an emergency landing at an airport in Thailand. I knew how serious it was from the footage taken after the landing.
As a salesman for the overseas markets, I had so many flights. When I was in Japan, I took a lot of flights from Japan to Europe. But it was when I was in Europe that I took so many flights for business. I had to take flights every week for six years to visit my European customers. I do not know the exact number of flights I took during those six years. But by simple calculation, I seemed to have taken about 700 flights in those six years. This means that I seem to have taken about 100 flights a year. However, I was lucky to have no serious mishaps.
Of course, I did have a lot of mishaps. I had experienced a number of turbulences, some of which required me to fasten my seat belt. But none of them were so serious as the one the flight faced in the sky over Thailand. I had also suffered a lot of flight delays. Among them was the delay in a flight from Milan to London, which I still remember well. I managed to come back to London by the end of the day, but it was a four to five-hour delay. The flight failed to leave a Milan airport due to dense fog. Then, I was put on a bus and taken from Milan airport to Turin airport, where the flight to London awaited me. It was a long and mysterious journey from Milan to Turin. I was not told by the airline company where we were heading. It was only when I arrived at the airport that I found I had moved to Turin.

　先日、あるフライトが激しい乱気流に見舞われたというニュースを見ました。その便は、ロンドンを出発し、シンガポールに向かっていたのですが、突然タイ上空で乱気流に見舞われました。その結果、一人の英国人の乗客が死亡しました。この便は、タイの空港に緊急着陸しました。着陸後の映像で、その深刻さがわかりました。
　海外向けのセールスマンをしていたときは、本当にたくさんのフライトに乗りました。日本にいたときは、欧州便に何度も乗りました。でも、ビジネスでものすごくたくさんの便を利用したのは欧州にいた時でした。ヨーロッパの顧客を訪問するために、6年間、毎週、飛行機に乗っていました。正確な便数はわかりませんが、単純計算すると、この6年間で約700回くらい搭乗したことになります。年にすると約100回くらいです。ただ、幸いなことに、大きな災難には遭遇しませんでした。
　もちろん、災難はたくさんありました。乱気流にも何度か遭遇しました。中には、シートベルトを締めなければならないようなものもありました。でも、タイ上空で直面したような深刻なものはありませんでした。フライト遅延にも何度か見舞われました。なかでもミラノからロンドンへのフライトの遅延は、今でもよく覚えています。その日のうちに、なんとかロンドンに戻ってこれましたが、4～5時間の遅れでした。濃霧のためにミラノの空港を離陸できなかったのです。バスに乗せられ、ミラノ空港から、ロンドン便が待っているトリノ空港へ連れていかれました。ミラノからトリノまでは、長く謎めいた旅でした。航空会社が行先を告げなかったためです。トリノに移動してきたことがわかったのは、トリノの空港に着いた時でした。
