APUの先生Recommends! 本紹介 ～田原先生～

みなさんこんばんは、しほです、そしてお久しぶりです～！
APUでは春セメスターが始まりましたね。100分授業になったり、久々の授業で疲れる方も多いかもしれませんが、自分たちのペースで無理しすぎずに頑張っていきましょう！
さて、今回から新企画が始まります！！
APUの先生方に専門に関する本や人生に影響を与えた本をお聞きしました。学生と先生の距離を縮めるきっかけになれれば幸いです🌸
今回インタビューしたのは、 ベトナム語やアジア太平洋の言語をはじめとする言語学を中心とした科目を教えている田原洋樹（たはら・ひろき）先生です。さっそく紹介していきます！
Good evening everyone! And this is Shiho, long time no see!
The spring semester has started at APU. Since the class has become 100min, everyone might be tired but do our best and take it easy!
Then, the new project will be started from this time!
We asked for books that are related to APU teachers’ majors and influenced APU teachers’ life. We would be happy if this project would be triggered to connect with APU teachers.
We asked Hiroki TAHARA who is teaching linguistics such as Vietnamese and the language of Asia pacific. We introduce him first!
田原先生の紹介/ Introducing Mr. TAHARA
田原先生は、APU開学当時から今までずっと先生として授業をしている数少ない先生のうちの１人なんです！開学からずっといる先生は10人ぐらいしかいないそうです。激レアな先生ですね。

趣味を尋ねると、、特にないそうです。というのも、ベトナム語が大好きで、ベトナム語の音楽を聴いたりもするけど、それが今の仕事だから。
それ以外には、去年の秋ぐらいから水泳を始めて、一週間に４キロぐらい泳ぐという、私たちよりも運動している田原先生。ちなみに水泳のコーチは高校時代のクラスメイト。千葉からのメールでアドバイスをくれるそうです。そのほかにお寿司屋さんで握っているところなどの、プロが仕事をしている場面を見るのが好きなのだそう。
「ベトナム料理も結構好き」とおっしゃっていて、留学中のベトナム料理の思い出もお話ししてくださいました。
大学２年生の夏にベトナムに留学に行かれた田原先生。新潟県出身で美味しいお米を食べて育った分、現地のお米が全然口に合わず、体重が171㎝なのにもかかわらず、一番痩せていた時の体重は48kg。しかしそれを見かけたお友達がうちにご飯食べにおいでよとか、この食べ物なら合うんじゃないかなど言ってくれたおかげでご飯も食べれるようになり、コミュニケーションをすることにも慣れていったそうです。
田原先生曰く、外国語を勉強するときは、ご飯をたべることがとても大切。
なので、留学先を選ぶときはご飯、食べものが美味しいところを選ぶのがおすすめだそうです！
ちなみに、好きな食べ物は白身魚のお刺身だそうです。ちょっと親近感がわきますね。
さあ！お待たせしました。ユニークな田原先生の紹介をしましたが、ここからは本題の本の紹介をします！人生に影響を与えた本と、学生にお勧めする本の２冊を紹介します。
Mr. Tahara is one of the teachers who have been in APU since APU has started. There are 10 people who like Mr. Tahara in APU so he is such a rare teacher.
His hobby is… nothing but this means he loves Vetonamese so he often listens to Vietnamese music because this is his job.
Besides this, he started swimming last autumn, he is swimming 4km per week. The swimming coach is a classmate from high school. The coach is advising him throughout the e-mail. Also, he likes to watch working professionals such as gripping in Sushi restaurants.
He gave us memories of Vetonemase dishes while studying abroad.
He went to Vietnam to study abroad when he was in 2nd grade at university. Since he grew up in Niigata prefecture where rice is delicious, the rice of Vietnam didn’t fit him. So that he was 171cm though, his weight was 48kg. But his friends who found him invited him to his house to eat dishes and recommended dishes that Mr. Tahara could eat so that he was able to eat dishes and get used to communication in Vietnam.
Mr. Tahara says when we study languages, eating dishes is very important,
So, when we choose a place to study abroad, it’s recommended to choose a place where dishes are delicious.
By the way, his favorite food is white fish. I (Shiho) felt a sense of affinity.

Although we introduced Mr. Tahara, from here, the main contents will be introduced! We introduce the book which influenced him and the book which recommends it for students.
「人生に影響を与えた本」/Book which influenced to him
田原先生にとって人生に影響を与えた本、それは
西江雅之『ことばを追って』（1989）大修館書店
西江雅之『新・ことばの課外授業』 (2012) 白水社
Q.「この本をおすすめする理由はなんですか？」
Ａ.「厳密にいうと、『ことばを追って』という本よりも、西江雅之先生という人が衝撃的な人だったから」
著者である西江先生は田原先生の大学時代、人類言語学という授業を担当されていて、様々な伝説があったそうです。4,5年お風呂に入っていないとか、カラスとか鳩を捕まえて食べているだとか、、、後で本人に聞いたらだいたい本当だったとのこと。衝撃！！
他にも若い時にスワヒリ語の辞典を作ったとか。もう突き抜けちゃっている天才。
だから西江雅之という人に打ちのめされてどんな本を書いてるんだろうと思って手に取ったのがこの本だったとのこと。
ちなみに、田原先生の世代で日本のいろんな大学で言語を研究している先生は大体、最低一回は西江先生の授業を東京外大か早稲田、東京藝術大学のどこかで聞いていて、一回は「（この人）すげー」と打ちのめされているのだとか！
Q.「西江先生の本を読むときのキーワードなどはありますか？」
A.「コミュニケーションという表現ではなく、”伝え合い”という表現を用いていること」
言葉ができればなんでもできるっていうことではなく、アイコンタクトや舌打ちもコミュニケーションの道具であって、そのうちのひとつに言葉があるという考え方が西江先生の本を読むときの重要ポイント。
さらに、写真を撮るのが上手で、この本の帯の写真は西江先生が自分で撮った写真になので写真好きの方はぜひ写真もチェックです！
Q.「印象に残っているところはありますか？」
A.「彼が思っている言葉は、僕らが思っている世界よりももっと広い世界なんだっていうこと」
言葉を学ぶっていることは、単語を勉強する、文法を勉強するってことだけじゃない。私たちが思っている「単語できます」「文法できます」ってことよりはるかに広い。
例えば「東京」って10回言ったら10種類の東京がある、と西江先生はよく話していたのだとか。
西江先生の考え方が斬新ですよね。言語を勉強している人にとっては言語を学ぶことに対する見方が変わってくるかもしれませんよ！

Q:「Why do you recommend these books?」
A:「Actually, it’s not because of the book 『kotoba-wo-otte』, because Mr. Nishie is a shocking person.」
When Tahara sensei was a university student, Mr. Nishie was taking charge of anthropology, and there are some legends. For example, he doesn’t take a bath for 4,5 years and another thing is that he seizes crows or pigeons and eats them. After he asked about it, the legends were real….that’s shocking!!
Moreover, when Mr. Nishie was young, he made a dictionary of Kiswahili. So that he is a genius more than anyone else.
that’s why Tahara sensei was impressed by Mr. Nishie, and he wants to know who Mr. Nishie is, so Tahara sensei got the books.
Incidentally, teachers who were studying linguistics in various universities in Japan, have taken the class of Mr. Nishie at Tokyo Univ. of Foreign Studies, Waseda Univ., and Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and then must have been impressed by him at least once at that time.
Q:「Is there any keywords when we read the books of Mr. Nishie?」
A:「It’s that he doesn’t explain communication, but explains the words with exchange each other.」
He thinks that eye contact and tut are tools of communication then language is also one of the tools. This is an important point when we read books.
Furthermore, the picture of the book’s wraparound was taken by Mr. Nishie since he is good at taking pictures. So please check it if you like taking pictures.
Q:「Do you have any impressive points?」
A:「The word Mr. Nishie is thinking is more wide meaning than the one we are thinking.」
Learning a language is not studying words and grammar. It’s wider than what we know of many words and grammar. For example, he thinks if we say “Tokyo” ten times, there is not the same “Tokyo”.
I (Shiho) thought the way Mr.Nishie thinks is original. It might make your thinking different from people who are studying language!!

『もっとにぎやかな外国語の世界』(2014)を出版された黒田先生の紹介をします！
黒田先生はロシア語の研究をしています。APUで開講されていた「アジア太平洋の諸言語」という科目でロシア語の担当として勤務されていたそう！
ロシア語はもちろん、黒田先生は様々な言語にも興味を抱いており、多言語環境に生きる面白さも知っている。その先生が書かれた書籍が、多国籍の環境下に暮らすAPU生と合致しているのではないかということで、この本を選んでくださいました！
黒田先生ですが、ロシア語教師となると一変して厳しい先生だそうです。課題や求める内容についてもかなりタフな要求らしい…。
でも、その厳しい指導の中に、外国語を学ぶ楽しさや他の言語についても視野を広げる大切さについて教えてくださる方だそうです！田原先生は、「APU生の性格と黒田先生は波長が合うのでは…？」とおっしゃっていました〜
「APUって日本語・英語だけに限らずに様々な言語が響き合う環境で、授業内では二言語を用いているけどキャンパス内には更に多様な言語が飛び交っている。そのにぎやかな環境の素晴らしさに気づいて欲しい！」という言葉をいただきました～
ここからは、番外編！田原先生ご自身についてもう少し詳しく聞いてみたよ！
Recommended books for students
Ryunosuke Kuroda, A More Lively World of Foreign Languages (2014), Hakusuisha
I'd like to introduce Prof. Kuroda, who published "A More Lively World of Foreign Languages" (2014)!
Kuroda-sensei is a researcher of Russian, and used to work as a Russian teacher in the course "Languages of the Asia Pacific" at APU!
In addition to Russian, Dr. Kuroda is also interested in various languages and knows the fun of living in a multilingual environment. He chose this book because he thought that a book written by him would be in line with APU students living in a multilingual environment!
Kuroda-sensei is said to be a very strict teacher when it comes to teaching Russian. It seems that he has very tough requirements for assignments and what he wants.
However, in the midst of his strict guidance, he teaches the joy of learning a foreign language and the importance of broadening one's horizons to include other languages! Mr. Tahara said, "I think the personalities of APU students and Mr. Kuroda are on the same wavelength. Mr. Tahara said, "I think the personalities of APU students and Mr. Kuroda are on the same wavelength.
She said, "APU is an environment where not only Japanese and English are spoken, but also a variety of other languages. I want you to realize the beauty of this lively environment! That's what he said to me!
Here comes the extra part! I asked him a little more about himself.
田原先生が言語学習者の時代で一番苦労したこと
What Tahara Sensei
struggled with the most when he was a language learner
田原先生へインタビューを行なっている最中、
「田原先生が、言語学習をしていた時代に辛かったことは何だろう…。APU生と同じような悩みを持っているのかな」
という疑問を持ったの。なので、直接尋ねてみました！！
私の中では、「文法が大変。とか、語彙を覚えるのがねぇ…」という回答を待っていたのですが、意外な回答が返ってきたんです。
Q.「ベトナム語を学んでいくうちに、一番苦労したことって何ですか？」
A.「ベトナム語らしさを身につけるってことかな」
ベトナム語らしさ…って何でしょう。APU生の何人かはこの一文でも共感した人はいるかもしれないけど、私は、はてなマークが浮かんでいました…。
田原先生：「発音とか練習って、難しいんです。地域によっても差があって、それも覚えなくてはいけない。でも、努力次第で克服できる内容でもあるんですよ。それよりも、ベトナム人とのコミュニケーションになると”ベトナム人らしさ”という簡単な言葉で説明し難い能力を習得しなきゃならないんだよね」
Q. ”ベトナム人らしさ”という苦労をどのように克服されたのですか？」
A. 「身体で痛い目にあって、ぶつかりながら上手くなっていくことと、友達と話をすることかな。」
現在、ベトナム・ホーチミン市には約２万人の日本人たちが生活しているけど、田原先生が留学されていた当時の人数は、わずか35人程度だったそうです。その上、ネット環境も無かったため、ベトナム語で生活するしかなかったという厳しい環境の中での生活が、”ベトナム人らしさ”の習得の手助けになったのだそうです。また、何度も友達の前で書き直しをしたり発音を繰り返していたそうです。
ベトナム語を熱心に勉強されていた田原先生。留学から帰り、家で眠りについた時に夢の中で寝言を言ったそうなんです、なんと「ベトナム語」で。
先生自身が直接寝言を聞いたことではないので確かな情報ではないのですが、寝言がベトナム語になってしまうほど没頭しなくては、「〇〇らしさ」という能力は身につけられないのだなと感じました！！

I wondered if he had the same problems as APU students. So I asked her directly!
In my mind, I thought, "Grammar is hard. In my mind, I was waiting for an answer like, "Grammar is hard," or "Learning vocabulary is hard," but I got an unexpected answer.
Q. "What was the most difficult thing for you to learn as you were learning Vietnamese?
A. "I think it's learning how to speak Vietnamese.
What do you mean by "Vietnamese character..." Some of the APU students may have been able to relate to this sentence, but for me, a hatchet mark came to mind...
Dr. Tahara: "Pronunciation and practice are difficult. There are differences from region to region, and you have to learn those as well. But it's also something that you can overcome with effort. But more importantly, when it comes to communicating with Vietnamese people, you have to master the ability of "Vietnamese character," which is difficult to explain in simple words.
Q. How did you overcome the hardship of being "Vietnamese-like"?
A. "By getting better through physical pain and bumps, and by talking to my friends.
Currently, there are about 20,000 Japanese people living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, but at the time when Mr. Tahara was studying abroad, there were only about 35 people. In addition, there was no internet connection, so he had to live in Vietnamese, which was a difficult environment to live in. In addition, she had to rewrite and repeat her pronunciation many times in front of her friends.
Ms. Tahara was studying Vietnamese very hard. When she returned home from her study abroad program and fell asleep at home, she dreamt that she talked in her sleep in Vietnamese.
I'm not sure about this because I didn't hear him talking in his sleep, but I felt that you can't acquire the ability to be "00-like" unless you are so immersed in it that your sleep-talking becomes Vietnamese!

「言語の面でいうと…単語の勉強や文法の勉強というものなしでは済まない。語学の勉強は、労力がかかり簡単なことではない。でも、その先にある世界があまりにも楽しいんだよね」
「ベトナム人と一緒に喜怒哀楽をしたり、一緒に笑ったり泣いたりする瞬間が素晴らしいんですよ。勉強という辛いものに耐える価値は絶対にあると思う」
APUの中にはAP言語と呼ばれる言語学習機会があるよね
キャンパスの中に数多く在籍してる多国籍の学生とのチャンスを手にするしかない！
難しい言語の勉強の先に、もっと楽しい世界が広がっていて、それを得る快感がたまらないんだそう。
みんなも、そんな経験や体験はあるかな？？
Finally! Professor Tahara has a comment for APU students!
"In terms of language... you can't do without the study of vocabulary and grammar. Studying a language is not an easy task, as it takes a lot of effort. But the world beyond that is just so much fun.
The moments of joy, anger, sorrow, laughing, and crying together with the Vietnamese people are wonderful. I think it's definitely worth enduring the pain of studying.
There's a language learning opportunity at APU called AP Language.
You just have to take the chance with the multinational students that are so numerous on campus!
There's a whole new world of more fun beyond studying a difficult language, and they can't wait to feel the pleasure of getting it.

また、別府市民の方に向けてもお言葉をいただきました！！
「わたしは、”外国語”という捉え方って、令和時代に合っているのかな、と自問することが多いんです。最近になってどこにいても外国語を聞くことはあるし、ご飯を食べに行っても外国人の店員さんもいる。そんな時に”外国語”っていう括りではなく、他の切り分け方があるのではないか。他言語も一緒に生活することができればいいなって考えています。国という切り分けではなく、多くの種類の言葉が響きあっていることを楽しみ、言語が上手にできない人にも片言でも話して近づいていく姿勢が大事ではないかと考えています」
今の時代、日常に外国の方を見かけるようになりました。
しゅんすけ自身も昨日、温泉に行ったら露天風呂に外国人の男性が話しながら座っていましたね。
外国人の言葉は聞き取れないから…。と否定的にならずに一歩踏み出して話しかけてみてはいかがでしょうか！
多様な言語が日常に響き合う世界を共生していく。
常に外国人と寄り添っていくことの大事さというものを学びました。

I often ask myself if the concept of "foreign language" is appropriate for the Japanese era. I often ask myself if my view of "foreign language" is appropriate for the Japanese era. Recently, I hear foreign languages everywhere I go, and even when I go out to eat, there are foreign waiters. At times like this, I wonder if there is another way to categorize them, rather than just "foreign languages. I'm thinking that it would be nice if we could live together in other languages. I think it is important to enjoy the fact that many different languages resonate with each other and to approach people who cannot speak the language well, even if it is only one word.
In this day and age, we see more and more foreign people in our daily lives.
Shunsuke himself went to a hot spring yesterday and saw a foreign man sitting in the open-air bath talking.
I couldn't understand a foreigner's words, so. Why don't you take a step forward and talk to them instead of being negative about it?
We will live together in a world where diverse languages resonate in our daily lives.
I learned how important it is to always be close to foreigners.
