デザインスクーで学ぶポートフォリオの作り方

アメリ｜銀行員デザインスクールに行く

イリノイ 工科大学デザイン学科（以下ID）にて勉強中のアメリです。（自己紹介👉こちら）

IDはキャリア教育に力を入れていて、今学期もキャリアに関する様々なレクチャーが開催されました。本日はその一つ、ポートフォリオの作り方について記述します。
これからポートフォリオを作る方、またはバージョンアップさせたい方におすすめの内容です。

今回ご紹介するのは就活用ポートフォリオの内容です。受験用ポートフォリオの作り方はこちら。

※ 今回は英語と日本語のちゃんぽん記事になります。学校で教わった通りに記録したいためです。一部日本語で補足します。

記事の最後ではレクチャーで紹介されたポートフォリオ例を載せています。

サマリー

  • ポートフォリオは５分以内に読める分量にする

  • 手掛けたプロジェクトを書くだけではない。自分の来歴、人柄についても書く

  • 完成形だけでなくプロセスを見せる

  • 成功談だけでなく、自分をどう振返り、評価し、次に活かすことができるか見せる

  • 自分の夢とつながるプロジェクトを見せる。自分の夢とマッチしないプロジェクトは見せない

What is a portfolio?

- A portfolio is a view into who you are
- It's not only about showing capability
- A portfolio should say something about you
- A portfolio is something we have a control

A portfolio is honest.

- Don't make people misunderstand
- Don't put something you just touched. Put something you actually worked on
（自分ができないことを書いたら、その仕事に就いた時に困る）

Who does the employer choose when all of the candidates look great?

- Choose a candidate who fits the culture and what you want.
（候補者全員のポートフォリオが素晴らしい時、雇い主は誰を選ぶか？
企業文化や企業と候補者のやりたいことがマッチしている人を選ぶ）

企業とあなたのやりたいことがFitするかが大切

What do you put in your portfolio?

Put about your work, your history, and about you.
- A portfolio is not only about your work
- Should include your history. (History is in CV.→❌No. It should also cover in a portfolio)

A portfolio should be seen in 5 minutes.
That's how much time most recruiters spend looking at a portfolio.
- Portfolio is often long.
- Portfolio is the introduction. It should not be too long.
- Should have something attractive within 5 minutes.

Your work

  1. First of all, show me how you approach a challenge. -Storytelling-

    • How did you get there?

    • Can you build solutions?

    • Show me how you process work?

    • Show the points (Don't explain step by step)

    • Show both highly polished work as well as in-process work
      （出来上がった完成形だけを見せるのではなく、途中のスケッチ、インタビューをしている様子なども含めて見せること。）

  2. Show you can learn quickly and adapt to the new environment.

    • This is not just about learning new tools and methods

    • If you treat a new topic, show that you can learn from people, adopt and blend into a new environment, and be part of it

  3. Show how you balance the different interests of different stakeholders.

    • A good portfolio shows that you are thinking about the user or customer and considering things from multiple perspectives.

  4. Show your ability for critical thinking and reflection.

    • Reflect on your project and think about how you would do differently, if you will start over again?

    • Most designers just show the end result or successes. But include your biggest lessons from the project and what you would do differently the next time.

  5. Show how your personality has influenced the project.

    • If you have a vision, share your vision. What you want to contribute to the world as a designer

    • Make it clear how that vision influenced your project, approach, and tools.

  6. Include the works that represent what you want to do.
    （得意なこと／すごいプロジェクトだけ書いているとその仕事が嫌いでもやり続けることになる。自分の夢とつながるプロジェクトを選ぶ）

    • What do you want to do in the future?

    • Which industry best utilizes your talent?

    • What do you want to be known for?

    • What is in demand?

    • What are you good at?

  7. What do you want to stop doing?
    （どんなに素晴らしいプロジェクトがあっても、自分が続けたくない仕事であればポートフォリオに含まない）

Your history

  1. Are you a generalist or specialist?
    デザインの世界ではGeneralistは貴重

  2. Seek for a balance of hard and soft skills

  3. Highlight experiences and skills that support your goal
    Show where you've been. Your education. Working for different industries, international clients, situations.

  4. Show what you can add to a team
    In addition to the skills (photoshop etc.), what you can add to a team is crucial.

You

Your portfolio should represent you. It must project your personality. What you care about.

  1. What about your life shaped who you are as a designer?

  2. What are you passionate about?

  3. What do you do in your spare time that can be connected to work?
