Introduction to What’s “right” or “wrong”?

　Aloha〜👋　It’s really cold and I often feel I wanna eat something hot like a “Oden” or “ Nabe” 🍲！　

　I’m little win and today, I gonna talk about “What’s right or wrong” in terms of western philosophy!  

　But, I’m still a beginner of learning this academic area. So, don’t expect my explanation too much🙇‍♂️

What do you think the concept of “right” and “wrong”?

　At first, murder (killing someone) is wrong action? Maybe, almost all people say “yes” and I also think so.

　However, If this murder is for helping your child, is this action wrong? Euthanasia ( allowing someone to die) is wrong? Abortion is wrong or right action? 

　Oh!! Considering the concept of right and wrong is really complex！😭　

　Of course, these question is controversial and western philosophy doesn’t have clear and perfect answer for this question. But, there are available options for this question in western philosophy. Ok, I'm gonna introduce some available options in this academic area for you all !!

1 Moral Objectivism

This theory of Moral Objectivism is related to ethics and morality and so forth. Moral Objectivism means that there is objectivism and universal moral  principle that is right for all people. 

　Namely, if we stand on this theory, we can objectively say whether this action is right or wrong.

<problem>

　This theory has some problems. For example, we can’t understand where this universal principle comes from. God? Nature? Biology? Something super-natural?

　Furthermore, specific actions are sometimes “right” and sometimes “wrong”.    For instance, giving pain like beating is wrong for all people. But, in case of treatment by the dentist ? Giving pain is wrong ! On the other hand, pain by the dentist is right !  

What a contradiction !!😳

2 Moral Subjectivism

This theory of Moral Subjectivism is strongly based on one idea that morality is decided by the individual. In short, each individual decides what is right or wrong. 

 Each action is either right or wrong depending on the individual and the situation.

<problem>

　But, this theory has a large number of problems. First, no two people have the possibility to share the same truths. 

　Second, this theory is difficult to justify punishment because what truth is depends on each individual.  And, it is difficult to define what is crime and to create law in society. Namely, if we stand on Moral Subjectivism, it’s impossible for us to keep our society.
