used clothes and shoes worth £70.5
million were sent to Ghana.
Due to the poor quality
of the clothes,
about 70 tons of clothing
a day are trucked from the market to informal dumpsites.
Kantamanto market
in Accra is a chaotic space the size of three football fields.
Among the estimated
30,000 vendors are
tailors, designers,
and printers who make something new from things we throw away.
Chloe Asaam, 28,
creates stylish pieces
from old T-shirts.
“I love the intimacy of creating clothes that are unique and tailored to the individual customer,”
she said.
Remakers and designers
of wasted clothes may be the pioneers of the future.
