20050214　多面体の玩具

　世界には「LaQ$${^{*1}}$$」のように幾何学的な図形$${^{*2}}$$が表現できる玩具が色々あるようだ。

　ZOMETOOL$${^{*3}}$$（ゾムツール$${^{*4}}$$）というのがある。部品は節と枝$${^{*5}}$$とで構成される。節と枝とのみだから立体構造専門$${^{*6}}$$である。LaQと比べるとその点は機能が少ない。しかし立体図形構造の可能性はかなり高そう$${^{*7}}$$である。LaQのようにもう少し小さく作れるといいような気がするが、教育現場での使用を考えて大きめ$${^{*8}}$$になっているのだろう。

　GEOMAG$${^{*9}}$$は節になる金属製の球と両端に強力な磁石が付いているだけの枝とが部品になっている。両端は北極Nと南極Sとが対になっている$${^{*10}}$$。これもZOMETOOLと同様に立体専門である。大きさはZOMETOOLよりは小さい$${^{*11}}$$。

　良く似た玩具でSupermag$${^{*12}}$$というのがある。GEOMAGとの違いは球の大きさや枝の長さが何種類かある$${^{*13}}$$点である。GEOMAGはそれぞれ一種類しかない$${^{*10}}$$。GEOMAGは、「Supermagは類似品なのでお話にならない$${^{*14}}$$」と息巻いている。

　更に磁石を使っている同様な物$${^{*15}}$$があった。前出のGEOMAGよりも古いらしい$${^{*16}}$$。

　ゴムで出来た節と竹ひごの枝とで作るのもある$${^{*17}}$$。こういった多面体の玩具はこのサイト$${^{*18}}$$$$で多く紹介されている。

　こんなくにゃくにゃした感じのブロック$${^{*19}}$$を見つけた。何となくマーク・ニューソン$${^{*20}}$$の意匠に似ている。これで幾何学的な立体構造ができると面白そうだが、作れそうに見えない。

Let's focus our attention on one of the products existing on the market
that attempts to imitate the Geomag patent. We are talking about
Supermag, produced by Plastwood, a former licensee of the Geomag brand and patent.

Effectively, this product consists of bars composed of a single
permanent magnet, of two different lengths, and of inferior diameter,
designed to achieve angles of junction between the bars (and the same
spheres) of less than the 60° offered by Geomag. The manufacturer of
Supermag attempts to stress the advantages of these variations,
highlighting above all the possibility of faithfully reproducing real
objects, such as vehicles (motorbikes, cars, excavators) and their
components (wheels etc. etc.)

Beyond the limitation comprised in proposing the reproduction of real
objects, which many construction systems on the market can already do better (also enabling the construction of moving models) a more careful analysis highlights the innumerable and substantial disadvantages of the SuperMag variants. Let's have a look at the most important:
