３月１３日、午前５時の新宿西口、京王百貨店向かいのビル[※1]の前のバス停留所[※2]。

一応季節としては春、と言いつつ吐く息は白い。夜明けの空気は冷たく澄んでいる。１０人くらいは到着を待っていたが、日中や夜の賑わいに比べれば閑散としている。
そんななか小さい車輪の黒い折りたたみ自転車[※3]に乗って、満杯のtimbak2のメッセンジャーバッグ[※4]を肩にかけた怪しい奴がやってきた。
はい、というわけで自分です。

旅に出るつもりはあった、一応(概要)

今回は東京から数百キロ離れた町で行われる、あるイベントに参加する為に旅をすることにしました。
与えられている猶予は４日（３泊）。初日２日目は同じ場所に泊まり、イベントに参加。そのあと１日を経て４日目夜８時頃の復路便で帰ってくる、というスケジュール。
見た感じ、余裕はあるように見える。見えるだろうけど。
実は、目的地への切符はない。
正確には、目的にやや近い場所までの飛行機は取ってある。けれどその先はもう一つの交通手段を使う必要があって、間に合うかは試してみないとわからない。
ちなみにそれを乗り過ごすとその日に目的地にはつきません。

実は、仕事の勤務継続による休暇を無理やり忙しいはずの年度末にぶつけての旅行で、色々と溜まってたものがあったわけで（またその辺は機会があれば）。代わり映えのしない人達、代わり映えのしない現状、代わり映えのしない時間、代わり映えのしない自分。
こうじゃない、これじゃない。とにかくどこかへ行きたかった。
どうせなら行ったことのない場所に行きたい。そして新しい場所で、新しい人や出来事に会いたかった。あと美味しいものも食べたかった（小声）
とにかく新宿からリムジンバスに乗って飛行機に乗れば、旅に行ける。
というわけで、バスターミナルに着いたけれど、すぐに乗れるわけではないんです。
それは、旅の相棒である折り畳み自転車がいるからです。基本的に自分の一人旅はこいつとコンビです。で、そのままだとバスには積めません。他の荷物を支障しないように、袋をかける必要があるんです。
で、ここで一工夫。輪行の時に自転車の衝撃防止に緩衝材を入れたくなるんですが、替わりに圧縮袋に入れた衣類を入れておくんですね。飛行機に乗れば気圧の差で膨らんで緩衝材の役割をはたしてくれている、はず。
では、袋に詰めてみるけど、意外とこれがフレームやハンドルに引っかかって、なかなか難しい。悪戦苦闘していたら。

「羽田行き発車しまーす」
ってあれ、今のバスが搭乗時間ギリのやつじゃなかったっけ[※5]？
あれ、これ東京から出れないんじゃないか？
二つ目の綱渡りスケジュール発生。次の便の中でバスに安全に急げ急げと心の中で懇願。そんな中で夜が明けてきて、見えたのが表紙の写真。
夜明けの藍色と朝焼けに淡く染まったレインボーブリッジは美しかった。（実際は焦りを消すための突発的行動）[※6]。

というわけで続きます。

[※1]ＭＹ新宿第二ビル。元々は安田生命のビルだったものを、新宿を代表するあの量販店が買ったもの。将来は建て替えで２０階規模の大型ビルになるらしい。どうでもいいけどヨドちゃんよりヨドくんの方がかわいいと思う。
[※2]今はバスタ新宿ができたので、大半のリムジンバスはここからではなくなってるのでご注意を。
[※3]Brompton。英国製のお洒落感漂うフォールディングバイク（折り畳み自転車、の響きが好きじゃないので分かりづらい時以外はこれかブロンプトンと呼んでます）。重さはママチャリよりは軽い11kg、持ち運びは簡単で（ローラーがあってスーツケースのように転がせる）、たたむのには少しの慣れだけで工具は不要、スピードもある程度出る。個々の要素だともっといい自転車もあるけれど、これらを兼ね備えている自転車は限られる。何より折り畳み機構がガジェットとしても素晴らしい。あるだけで絵になる。
[※4]timbuk2。自転車に乗って、旅や街乗りが好きで、ガジェット使いなら候補に上がってくるバッグ。クラシックメッセンジャーバッグのLは引くレベルででかい、が使いやすい。
[※5]乗ろうといていたのは5時20分の便。次の5時40分でも身一つならば間に合うけれど、輪行の場合はバスor電車＋空港でプラス30分はみておいたほうがいい（詳細は第２回）。ギリギリはいけない（戒め）。
[※6]現在の羽田⇄新宿のリムジンバスは、基本的に地下の首都高中央環状線を通るため、この風景は多分見れないと思います。格段に時間短縮したのはいいけど少しだけ寂しい。
