書評『スラムドッグ・ミリオネア』原作

　The story sheds a spotlight on the shadowy sides of India, such as: church priest abusing orphans, alcoholic father sexually abusing his own daughter, disabled children captured by a criminal group to pickpocket on the street, girls sold by her fathers as prostitutes to support their family while male adults enjoy drinking and playing cards, frequent conflicts and violence between Hindus and Muslims, women suffering from rapes and domestic violence, the police pretending not to see the injustice in slums, etc. From time to time, I got indignant and heart-broken, but managed to read it through only because Ram(the main character boy) is kind, brave and never looks away from the cruel reality in front of him.
　Years ago, it was made into a movie entitled “Slumdog Millionaire” which was awarded the Best Film in Oscar. I watched it too, and of course the movie was great, but I think the original novel is more detailed. It taught me a lot about Indian daily life as well. A masterpiece.

　アカデミー最優秀賞を受賞した『スラムドッグ・ミリオネア』の原作小説である本書は、インドの「影」の部分にスポットライトを当てている。孤児の子供達を虐待する神父。自分の実の娘を性的虐待する父親。犯罪組織に拉致され盗みを強要される、身体の障害を持った子供達。一家の生活を支えるため、父親によって売春宿に売られる少女たち（そのお金で飲酒しカードで遊ぶ村の男たち）、ヒンズー教徒とイスラム教徒の間で度々起こる暴力闘争、レイプやDVに苦しむ女性達、これら全てを見て見ぬフリをする警察…。　
　読んでいて何度も怒りがこみ上げ、胸が張り裂けそうになったが、主人公の男の子が思いやりがあって勇敢で、目の前の酷い現実から絶対に目を背けないので、自分も勇気を出して最後まで読み切ることができた。
　映画ももちろん素晴らしかったが、小説は描写がより細かく、インドの生活について学ぶことができたのも良かった。素晴らしい小説である。
