【読書メモ】青春とは、心の若さである（サムエル・ウルマン）

はじめに

以前から、年齢に関係なく精神的に若々しい人とそうでない人がいると感じていました。

その違いの要因を言語化してみたいと思っていたところ、アメリカの実業家・詩人サムエル・ウルマンの詩「Youth（青春）」に出会いました。

この詩は、その要因を見事に描いており、非常に心に響きました。本も購入し、他の詩も読みましたが「Youth（青春）」が一番良かった。

サムエル・ウルマンはどんな人？

サムエル・ウルマン（1840年4月13日 - 1924年3月21日）は、アメリカの実業家・詩人です。詳細についてはウィキペディアをご覧ください。

同書の解説を読むと、彼が非常に過酷な人生を送ったことがわかります。

ユダヤ人移民として差別を受け、事業で成功せず、戦傷で聴力を半ば失い、最愛の妻にも早く先立たれました。つらい・・・。

それでも、彼は敬虔なユダヤ教徒として教会活動、社会活動、教育事業などで数々の業績を残しました。

Youth（青春）はサムエル・ウルマンが78歳の時の作品。作品を作った時の年齢が既に青春を体現している気がします。

Youth（青春）

青春とは人生のある期間ではなく、心の持ちかたを言う。薔薇の面差し、紅の唇、しなやかな手足ではなく、たくましい意志、ゆたかな想像力、炎える情熱をさす。
Youth is not a period of life but a state of mind. It is not about rosy cheeks, red lips, and supple limbs, but about a strong will, rich imagination, and burning passion.

青春とは人生の深い泉の清新さをいう。青春とは臆病さを退ける勇気、安きにつく気持を振り捨てる冒険心を意味する。
Youth means the freshness of the deep springs of life. It means courage to challenge timidity and the adventurous spirit to shun comfort.

ときには、二十歳の青年よりも六十歳の人に青春がある。年を重ねただけで人は老いない。理想を失うとき初めて老いる。歳月は皮膚にしわを増すが、熱情を失えば心はしぼむ。
Sometimes, a sixty-year-old has more youth than a twenty-year-old. People do not grow old merely by living a number of years. They grow old by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

苦悩・恐怖・失望により気力は地に這い精神は芥になる。六十歳であろうと十六歳であろうと人の胸には、驚異に魅かれる心、おさな児のような未知への探究心、人生への興味の歓喜がある。
Worry, fear, and despair bow the heart and turn the spirit to dust. Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the sweet amazement of the stars, and the joy of the game of living.

君にも吾にも見えざる駅逓が心にある。人から神から美・希望・よろこび・勇気・力の霊感を受ける限り君は若い。
Within each of us, there is a hidden station where we receive messages from people, from God, and from the beauty, hope, joy, courage, and strength of life. As long as you receive these messages, you are young.

霊感が絶え、精神が皮肉の雪におおわれ、悲歎の氷にとざされるとき、二十歳であろうと人は老いる。頭を高く上げ希望の波をとらえる限り、八十歳であろうと人は青春にして已む。
When the signals are gone and the spirit is covered with the snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you have grown old, even at twenty. But as long as your spirit receives the beauty, hope, joy, courage, and strength, you are young, even at eighty.
