【英訳】侏儒の言葉21: 仏陀

本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Buddha

Siddhartha practised asceticism for six years after he sneaked out of the palace. The reason for which he needed to continue it for as long as six years must have been that he indulged in the utmost luxury back in the palace. The proof is that the son of a carpenter in Nazareth seems to have gone on only a forty-day fast.

Also,

Siddhartha had Chandaka hold his horse by the bit, sneaking out the palace, but later on, his habit of speculating frequently made him so melancholic. If it was the case, it might not be easy to decide which was the one who actually gave a sigh of relief after he slipped away, whether the future Buddha Shakyamuni himself or Yaśodharā, his wife.

After those six years of asceticism, Siddharta, under a bo tree, reached perfect enlightenment. The legend of his achievement tells us how material things rule the mind. First, he bathed in water, and then ate some milk porridge. Finally, he talked to Nanda Vara, who was said to be a cowherd girl.

仏陀
　悉達多は王城を忍び出た後六年の間苦行した。六年の間苦行したゆえんはもちろん王城の生活の豪奢をきわめていた祟りであろう。その証拠にはナザレの大工の子は、四十日の断食しかしなかったようである。
又
　悉達多は車匿に馬轡を執らせ、ひそかに王城を後ろにした。が、彼の思弁癖はしばしば彼をメランコリアに沈ましめたということである。すると王城を忍び出た後、ほっと一息ついたものは実際将来の釈迦無二仏だったか、それとも彼の妻の耶輸陀羅だったか、容易に断定はできないかもしれない。
又
　悉達多は六年の苦行の後、菩提樹下に正覚に達した。彼の成道の伝説はいかに物質の精神を支配するかを語るものである。彼はまず水浴している。それから乳糜を食している。最後に難陀婆羅と伝えられる牧牛の少女と話している。
