読書感想文というもの
小学生時代、白い原稿用紙を前にして、途方に暮れた。そういう方は多いですよね？
さて、学校で、読書感想文の書き方を教えてもらった生徒はいるだろうか？
最近、何人かの大学生と話す機会があったので聞いてみたら、感想文の書き方を教師から教えてもらった人は皆無だった。
本を読んだら、感想文は自然に書ける、という思い込みが正されることなく続いているのだろうか？自分が小学生時代に苦労したことのない人だけが教師になったのだろうか？
読書感想文の書き方について書いた本はある。例えば、このようなテクニックが書かれている。
読書感想文には、君の体験があったほうがいい。（中略）親しい人が亡くなっていたり、あるいはとんでもなく遠くの異国から転入生が来たりする課題図書もある。（中略）「死」や「戦争」「異国からの転入生」の体験なんて、やっぱりめずらしいよね。（中略）むかし話を使って体験の代わりにするんだ。特に、日本むかし話なら日本人の心の読みものとして、だれとでも共有できるよね。
こういったアドバイスは、元々教師が与えるべきことである。
私が小学生のころ、『黒馬物語』という本と、もう一冊、馬に関する本を読んでいた。２冊の観点の違い、描写の違い、結末の違いなどを、感想文に書こうかと思ったことがある。しかし、しなかった。当時は、他の人がしないことをするのは嫌だった（今は面の皮が厚くなったのか、必ずしもそうではない）。
小さい時に１冊の本で感想文を書くのは難しく、２冊読んで、比較する方が書きやすいだろう、と今でも思う。
５０年前と同様に、今でも読書感想文コンクールは行われている。
この記事によれば、前回の第６７回コンクールの応募総数は3,171,367編、参加校は24,140校だった。なお、この記事によれば第６０回コンクールの応募総数は、4,492,194編で、26,653校の参加だったということなので、かなり減っている。
やはり、学生数が減ったことが大きな理由だと思う。
このコンクールの最上位は内閣総理大臣賞、その次が文部科学大臣賞である。６７回コンクールでは、この二つの賞に、合わせて１０人が選ばれているが、男子２人、女子８人である。
５０年前と同様に、賞をとるのは女子が多い。医学系の私立大学入試で、性差別するのとは違って、多分公正に評価しているのだろう。私の小中学生時代、口げんかしたら男の子は女の子にはかなわなかった。それが作文能力に関係しているかどうかはわからない。
感想文の対象は、自分が選んでもいいし、課題図書でもいいことになっている。受賞作も、課題図書の感想文だけではなかった。私のころは課題図書しか選べなかったように思うから、その点は進歩している。
また、「マンガや写真集、図鑑、辞典を読んで応募できる？」という質問に対して、コンクールの主催者は以下のように答えているから、マンガは排除されていない。しかし、マンガの感想文はおそらく地区の一次審査を通らないだろう。私は、マンガが小説に劣るとは思わないのだが。
自由読書の部での応募については、応募要項で除外している〈教科書、副読本、読書会用テキスト類またはこれに準ずるもの、雑誌（別冊付録を含む）、パンフレット類、日本語以外で書かれた図書および課題図書〉以外であれば応募できます。
しかし、電子書籍については
紙媒体での書籍に限りますのでご応募いただけません。
にべもない、とはこのことを言うのだろう。今や岩波少年文庫でさえ電子書籍になっている時代なのに、時代錯誤である。紙の本を売りたいという魂胆が見えすぎである。まあ、電子書籍を読んで感想文を書いても、評価者には知る由もないと思うのだが。
審査者は、どのような観点で評価しているのだろうか。岡山県学校図書館協議会のサイトで、審査基準を見つけた。
全国審査の留意点（特に２に重点をおいて審査する）
１ 応募規定にあっているかどうか。
２ ものの見方・考え方が素直であり、自分の生活体験を通じての所感がにじみ出ているかどうか。
３ 図書の選定の程度はどうか。
４ 文章の構成・表現は学年相応であり、文字のつかい方、書き方が正しいかどうか。
６７回コンクールの内閣総理大臣賞と文部科学大臣賞を受賞した作品を読んでみた。人生に向かって前向きで、ひたむきさがあふれている。屈折した人もいないし、私のように本の内容を批判する人もいない。
ものの見方が素直であることが、コンクールでは大切らしい。この基準は、おそらく何十年間も同じだろう。個性は求められない。むしろ要らない。だから、毎年の入賞作を見ても、似通っているだろう。
日本では、学校行事や本の感想といった「生活作文」を書かせることが多く、読み手の共感を得る書き方が重視されています。
共感は曲者である。それについては『反共感論』について書くときに触れようと思う。
ところで、ある人は高校時代、毎年読書感想文の宿題が出たが、国語の教師が毎年変わったので、同じ感想文を出し続けたという。大胆な奴である。

Now, have any of students been taught how to write a book report in school?
I recently had a chance to talk to some college students and asked them, and none of them had been taught how to write a book report by their teachers.
Is the assumption that if you read a book, you can write a book report naturally, a belief that has gone on without correction? Have only those who never struggled in their own elementary school days become teachers?
There are books written about how to write a book report. For example, this technique is described.
Your book report should have your experience. (Omitted) There are also problem books in which a close person has died or a transfer student comes from a foreign country that is ridiculously distant. (Omitted) The experience of "death," "war," and "transferring from a foreign country" is rare, isn't it? (Omitted) Use old stories to replace the experience. In particular, if it's a Japanese old story, you can share it with anyone as a reading of the Japanese mind.
This kind of advice should be given by the teacher in the first place.
When I was in elementary school, I was reading a book called "Black Beauty" and another book about horses. I once thought about writing book report of the differences in perspectives, depictions, and endings of the two books. But I did not. At the time, I didn't want to do what others didn't (now that I'm brazen, I don't necessarily hate it).
I still think that it is difficult to write impressions in one book when I am small, and it is easier to read and compare two books.
The book report contest is still being held, just as it was 50 years ago. According to this article, the 67th contest had a total of 3,171,367 entries and 24,140 participating schools. According to this article, the 60th competition had 4,492,194 entries and 26,653 participating schools, so the number of entries has decreased considerably. I think the main reason is the decrease in the number of students.
The top prize in this competition is the Prime Minister's Award, followed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award. In the 67th Competition, a total of 10 people were selected for these two prizes, 2 men and 8 women.
As was the case 50 years ago, more girls are awarded the prizes. Unlike the sex discrimination in the entrance examinations of private medical universities, perhaps they are evaluating the candidates fairly. In my elementary and junior high school days, boys were no match for girls when it came to bickering. I don't know if that has anything to do with writing ability.
The subject of the book report could be chosen by you or the assigned book. The award-winning works were not limited to book reports on assigned readings. This is an improvement from my days when I could only choose assigned books.
In response to the question, "Can I read manga, photo books, illustrated books, and dictionaries to enter the contest?" the organizers of the competition answered as follows, so manga are not excluded. However, a comic book report would probably not make it past the district's first round of judging. I do not think that manga is inferior to novels.
Entries for the free reading category may be submitted as long as they do not include the following items excluded from the application guidelines: textbooks, supplementary reading materials, textbooks for reading groups or their equivalents, magazines (including separate supplements), pamphlets, books written in languages other than Japanese, and assigned readings.
However, as for the e-book
Only books in paper format may be submitted.
I would say this to be ridiculous. Even though Iwanami Shonen Bunko is now an e-book, it is an anachronism. The spirit of wanting to sell a paper book is too visible. Well, I don't think the evaluator knows even if I read an e-book and write book report.
From what point of view do the judges evaluate? I found the screening criteria on the site of the Okayama Prefectural School Library Council.
Points to keep in mind in the national examination (especially focusing on 2) 1 Whether the application rules are met.
2 Whether his/her view and way of thinking is straightforward and his/her impressions through his/her own life experience are oozing out.
3 How about the selection of books?
4 The composition and expression of the sentences are appropriate for the grade, and whether the letters are used and written correctly.
I read the winning entries of the Prime Minister's Prize and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Prize in the 67th Competition. It is full of positivity and earnestness toward life. No one is inflected, no one criticizes the book like I did.
It seems that it is important for the competition to have a straightforward view of things. This standard will probably be the same for decades. No individuality is required. Rather not needed. So, if you look at the winning works every year, they will be similar.
In Japan, students are often asked to write "lifestyle compositions" such as school events and impressions of books, and the writing style that gains the reader's sympathy is emphasized.
Be careful when dealing with empathy. I will touch on that when I write about "Against empathy".
By the way, a man kept submitting the same book report for three years because his high school Japanese teacher changed every year. He is bold.
