オーティス・レディング　"Try a Little　Tenderness" ソウル・ミュージック、ソウル・イングリッシュの唯一無二の魅力

Otis Redding 亡くなって56年魅惑し続けるOtis Reddingは1967年に飛行機事故で亡くなりました。

多くの方々にとって初めて聞く名前かもしれませんが、代表曲の一つ"The Dock of the Bayは今でも耳にしたことがあると思います。生前リコーディングされ、亡くなった翌年の1968年にリリースされた大ヒット曲です。

亡くなる直前にブレイクしていたのが"Try a Little Tenderness"です。所属したStax Records イギリス・ツアーでのライブバージョンは圧巻です。The Beetles, Tom Jones, Mic JaguarらThe Rolling Stonesが出迎え、会場は大変盛り上がったようです。Otis Redding “Try a Little Tenderness” Live 1967と称するYouTube動画(2012年アップロード）でその様子が見られます。

当時１５才だったイギリス人ファンが投稿した次のコメントが世界中のファンの声を代弁しています。

"This was at East Ham ,London. I was a 15 year old. …..I am now 70 and if soul means singing with vibrancy from the heart, then Otis has no equal. God bless."（LondonのEast Hamでのライブ、、、私は現在70才(80才）、もしソウル（ミュージック）が心の底から出る出る活力で歌うことであるなら、 Otisの右に出る者はいない。神の祝福あれ。）

時代を超え、人種を超え、多くの人に愛され続けているOtid Reddingの短い生涯については"Otis Ray Redding Documentary"描かれています。Stax Records の経営陣、プロジューサー、バンド仲間、そして遺族、友人が、異口同音にその人柄に魅せられたと語っています。

オリジナルは1932年Ray Noble Orchestraの曲、後Sinatraも歌う

オリジナルは1932年に演奏Ray Noble Orchestra ボーカルVal Rosingという編成でレコーデイングされリリースされています。

翌年1933年にBing Crosby、そして、1946年にFrank Sinatraが歌い、スタンダード・ジャズのスローとして定着しました。

恐らく、ある人生経験が豊かな男性が、まだ人生経験が浅い男性が自分の妻ついて愚痴を述べるのを聞き、諭しているのでしょう。ゆっくり、しんみりしたムードが伝わってきます。戦前、戦後の白人の上流、中流階級の社交ダンスでよく演奏された曲です。

Otis ReddingがR&B調African-Americanソウルミュージックに換え大ヒット

この曲をStax Records専属プロジューサーIsaac Hayesが編成し、Booker T. & the M.G.'s,の伴奏でStax Records流のソウルフルなR&Bバージョンに替えました。大ヒットです。Otisは初めはこの曲にあまり関心を示さなかったようですが、スタジオに入るや大変気に入り、Otisは自身のアドリブを付け加えて完成させました。Try a little tenderness byOtis ReddingRedding (STAX/VoltTour)を見ての通り、1960年代後半のAfrican American的表現が散りばめられています。Otisバージョンの歌詞は以下の通りです。

Otis Redding に触発され多くの歌手がこの曲をカバーしています。Three Dog Night 、Aretha Franklin 、Tina Turner 、Tom Jones 、Rod Stewart、The Commitments、Rod Stewart、Etta James、Michael Bubleが歌っています。

筆者がのお気に入りは、映画"Sideways"において、名優Paul Giamattiがカラオケバーで披露する"Duets Paul Giamatti" です。

イギリスでは10年前にThe Voice UKーBBCというaudition番組でJames BruceがTom Jonesの前で歌っています。この曲の根強い人気が伺えます。日本ではトータス松本カバーしていますが、Otis Reddingの影響は今後も続きます。

1960年代アフリカ系アメリカン口語英語（黒人英語）の貴重な歴史的資料
