Forbidden use of Sick Days (使う事の許されない病休)Part1

Hey guys. Yet another long absence since posting. I will really try to be more consistent from now on!

In the previous post, I spoke of my manager using abusive language and outright lying to me. This will leave off just after that.
前の投稿では、マネージャーが僕に対して暴力的な言葉を使ったり、全く嘘をついたりしたと話しました。これそこからあまり経っちてないうちに起きた話です。

By the way, at this point, I was still new to Japan and completely at the mercy of my manager. So, I didn't understand sick days and how they worked...
ところで、この時僕は、日本に来たばかりだったし、仕事ではなんでもマネージャーの言いなりになっていました。だから、病休とはなにか、とか、病休がどのような仕組みなのかなどはよくわかっていませんでした。

So, when I got sick, I took the day off and used one of the 5 holiday pays that was available to me per year. Then, the manager told me I needed to come in on a Monday, which the school was open for once every six weeks for Japanese staff to catch up on paperwork.
だから、僕は、実際に病気になったとき、僕が年に5日間分使うことができた有給を使った。そうしたら、マネージャーは、月曜日に代わりに出勤しなくてはいけないといった。月曜日は、6週に一回、日本人スタッフが書類の処理をするために、校舎を開けている日だった。

I didn't really understand why they would deduct a holiday pay from me and then make me come in. (Actually, I would later find out that it was illegal.)
僕は、休むために有休を消費した上に、埋め合わせのために出勤しなくてはいけないのか全く分からなかった。（ちなみに、僕はあとでこれを知ることになるのだが、彼らが僕にさせたことは違法だった。）

What's more, whenever I or my foreign co-workers got sick, the manager would always first say to us "You can take the morning off, but could you still come in for the afternoon shift?" even if we were coughing or having a fever.
さらに言えば、僕やほかのネイティブ教師が病欠を取ろうとすると、そのマネージャーは「午前休をとってもいいけど、午後のシフトから来られない？」と聞いた。たとえ、僕たちがせき込んでいたも、熱があったとしてもだ。

It became a joke just between me and my coworkers to come up with extreme fictional scenarios like being hit by a car, or a Kaiju destroying Japan with the punchline always being " I'm sorry you were ( hit by a car) you can take the morning off, but could you still cover the afternoon?"
そんな風だったから、仕事を休むための極端な状況(車にひかれた、怪獣が町を襲ったなど)を想像して言い合うことは僕と同僚の間のジョークになった。そししてパンチラインはいつもこうだった：「（車にひかれたなんて）大変だったわね。午前休をとっても構わないけど、午後からは出勤できる？」

Well, this remained to be just a joke into the year until finally something "extreme" really did happen, healthwise. Around the wintertime, I came down with a bad cough. When I visited the doctor I was given the standard medicine and told to take it for a week. I didn't get better.
これは、ただのジョークの域を出なかった。1年後、実際に"極端な状況"に陥るまでは。冬頃になると、ひどく咳が出るようになった。医者にかかると、彼は一般的な風邪用の薬をくれた。でも、一週間たってもよくならなかった。

At this point, I was all out of those 5 vacation days allotted to me.
The symptom continued for some time, but as I was out of sick days I needed to come in. On my days off I would continue to go back to the doctor only to be given the medicine that didn't help.
この時、すでに僕は自分が1年のうちに使える5日の有休は使い切ってしまっていた。症状はしばらく続いていたけれど、使える有給がないので出勤するしかなかった。休みの日には相変わらず病院にいったけれど、結局効果のない薬をもらって帰るだけだった。
