News in Brief (7 July 2023) メモ #38

今回は、黒海穀物イニシアチブ(the Black Sea Initiative)の更新についての記事。

国連食糧農業機関 (the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO) は、食料価格 (food prices) は６月になり低下し続けている (continue to decline) ものの、この影響はまだ世界中の消費者へは届いていない (have not yet trickled down to consumers worldwide) と報告。

FAOのチーフエコノミスト (Chief Economist) であるマッシモ・トレロ (Maximo Torero) 氏は、穀物類 (cereals)、乳製品 (dairy)、砂糖 (sugar)の価格は落ちているが、食料価格の上昇 (food inflation) は世界の最貧国における飢餓の懸念を悪化させ続けている (aggravate hunger concerns in the world's poorest countries) と主張していました。

aggravate = worsen, exacerbate, compound などなど。反意語は、alleviate, improve など。

黒海穀物イニシアチブ (the Black Sea Initiative) はウクライナから世界市場 (global market) へ穀物を輸出する重要な合意です (a key agreement for the exports of gain)。なんとしても継続しないといけないでしょうね。

なんと、3200万メートルトン (32 million metric tonnes) もの穀物を世界中に届けるそうなので、食料価格の大きな下落につながります (enormaously to the decline of prices)。

7月17日が更新時期 (the date of the renewal) だそうです。ちょうど収穫時期 (when the harvest starts) だそうなので、重要な日 (a critical date) と述べられていました。もし更新されなければ、穀物商品の価格高騰が予想されるそうです (will observe a spike in terms of the prices of cereal commodities)。

ロシアが障害 (an impediment / an obstacle / a hindrance) になりそうですが、困ったことになる (be in a tough spot)になるのはごめんですし、食料価格に大きな悪影響を及ぼす (take a heavy toll on food prices) ことは止めてほしいですね。
