Ann-Kathrin Reck:

On the 21st of October our class had a walking tour of historic sites in Yokohama. One of the many places we saw was the フランス山 (France Hill). For me it’s always exciting to visit places with ruins. It gives a glimpse of the world and how it was before. I learned that day that “France Hill” is the place where the French army was stationed from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period. The Port View Hill Park was not only an important military base for France, but also for Britain. On the picture you can see the remaining walls from one room as well as one staircase (on the right on the photo). Now the walls are full of plants and ivy and you can only imagine how life had been during these times. I enjoyed it a lot visiting this place in the Port View Hill Park.

Kenshin Kitamura:

Minato-no-mieru-Oka Park was an interesting place for me. Actually, I had been to this place in June 2021. At that time, I didn’t know anything about the historical things of this park and just visited and walked through this area. However, when I visited the park at the second time with historical background in my mind and saw a lot of things in the park, I felt like I got a different perspective and I could see everything differently from what I saw in 2021.

Koki Kakizaki:

It was an exciting tour of visiting historical sites related to the beginning of the connection between Japan and foreign countries in the Meiji period. The most interesting place visited in the tour is Yokohama Archives of History. It was impressive. I saw hundreds of exhibits like photos, newspapers, maps, diaries, and documents. I felt deeply the atmosphere of the era while looking at the exhibits and reading the guide texts. Especially, I was impressed with a group of trees growing in the courtyard. The trees appear on the famous picture of Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry’s landing, and the picture is displayed at the front of the trees, so you can compare the two and imagine the scene of which the US navy led by Perry was coming to Yokohama, then concluded a treaty at the very place. This tour deepened my knowledge of the Bakumatsu-Meiji era which I learnt at school.

Yeyi Xiao:

I really like Yamate House No.111. Although it's not big, it's connected to modern Japan very well. It has Halloween decorations, which are very cute, and there are different displays at different times. The view out of the window is also very beautiful, you can see the rose garden in between. While people visit Yamate House No.111 for free, Yamate House No.111 can also earn some income through activities to better maintain the operation of the building. I am pleased that Yamate House No.111 has been preserved to this day, so that we can still easily experience the Spanish bungalows of 100 years ago in Yokohama.
