『 Ralph Towner - Gary Burton / Matchbook 』

よくよく考えてみればゲイリーバートンはラリーコリエルを初めパットメセニーやジョンスコフィールドなど沢山のギタリストをバンドに起用して来ているが、デュオを演じたギタリストは後にも先にもラルフタウナーだけであることに気が付いた。ゲイリーにとってデュオを展開するには互いの楽器の音量や響きの観点からアコースティックギターに特化したラルフタウナーが一番合っているという判断があったのかもしれない。実際のところ演奏を順に聴いてみて冒頭の"Driffting Petals"から全てが心地よい演奏なのだが、その中でも私は④⑥⑦⑨が気に入った。④"Icarus"  はラルフタウナー作、タウナーが"Oregon"でもしばしば採用している重要なレパートリーでゲイリーのしなやかなマレット捌きのスピード感とラルフのギターのキレの良いカッティングがシンクロナイズしてとてもスリリングだ。⑥のタイトル曲"Matchbook" はラルフがギターエフェクトを用いて軽快なリズムを刻みゲイリーが其れに呼応して美しいメロディを素早く紡ぎ出して行く。⑦"1×6" はラルフのギターだけで爪弾かれる間奏曲、内省的で心地よい小曲だ。ラストを飾る⑨は意外にもミンガス曲"Goodbye Pork Pie Hat"である。予期せぬ選曲だけにその分インパクトも強い。もの悲しい曲想に乗せて弾くラルフのブルージーなギターのフレージングがとても印象的であった。1974年録音作品。☆☆☆☆☆‬

Thinking about it carefully, Gary Burton has used many guitarists in his band, including Larry Coryell, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield, but I realized that Ralph Tawner was the only guitarist he played a duo with before and after. Gary may have decided that Ralph Tawner, who specializes in acoustic guitar, was the best fit for developing a duo in terms of the volume and sound of each instrument. In fact, listening to the performances in order, all of them are comfortable performances from the opening "Driffting Petals", but I especially liked ④⑥⑦⑨. ④"Icarus" is an important repertoire written by Ralph Tawner, which he often plays in his band "Oregon", and Gary's flexible mallet speed and Ralph's sharp guitar cutting are synchronized, making it very thrilling. In the title song of ⑥, "Matchbook", Ralph uses guitar effects to create a light rhythm and Gary responds to it by quickly spinning out a beautiful melody.  ⑦ "1×6" is an introspective and comfortable short piece, an interlude played only by Ralph's guitar. The last piece, ⑨, is the unexpected Mingus piece "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat." The unexpected selection makes it all the more impactful. Ralph's bluesy guitar phrasing, played over the sad melody, is very impressive.  Recorded in 1974. ☆☆☆☆☆
