『 Steve Kuhn / Motility 』

　1970年代初期『ECM』を代表するピアニストといえばチックコリア、キースジャレット、ポールブレイ、そしてスティーヴキューンであったと思う。いずれ劣らぬ個性的なピアニストであるがスティーヴキューンの耽美性は僕らを強く惹きつけたものであった。
　スティーヴは今も健在で新作なども発表していてファンとして嬉しい限りであるが、近年の『コンコード』盤や『ヴィーナス』盤など往年の鬼気迫る危ういまでの耽美的なキューンを知るものからは満足の行くものとはなっていない。やはりスティーヴキューンの場合、’70年代の『ECM』作品にトドメを刺すのではなかろうか。
　本盤はその彼の『ECM』第3作『Motility』である。昔、此のアルバムが好きで何度も聴いた。Steve Kuhnのピアノがキラキラと煌めいてSteve Slagleのフルートが抒情的で美しいA1『The Rain Forest 』やうねる様に情熱的なピアノに始まりロック基調になりながら耽美的なA2『Ocean In The Sky』もよく聴いたが僕の場合、寧ろB面の方をよく聴いていたのを覚えている。
　今聴き直してみてもB1『Deep Tango』はタンゴ調のリズムに官能的なテーマメロディがのっかって圧巻のインパクトを私に与えてくれる。Harvie Swartzのベースが自在にうごめきSteve Kuhnのピアノが激しい情熱を傾けて唸り始める。ユニゾンで反復する官能的なテーマが素晴らしい。　　
　続くB2『motility / The Child Is Gone』の前半はアップテンポで刻む曲、Michael Smith の繊細なドラミングとHarvie のベースランニングが圧巻だ。後半は内省的で映像的な小曲、キュートなテーマが魅力的だ。
　B3『A Danse For One』はKuhnのピアノの魅力が満載、ラスト曲B4『Places Never Been』はKuhnのピアノが暴れ爆発してSlagle のフルートとHarvie のベースと合わさり大団円を描いて終了する。
　リスナーとしては満足感に満たされた気持ちの約23分である。A面と合わせて本作は傑作と評して良かろうと思う。1977年録音作品。☆☆☆☆☆

　The representative pianists of ECM in the early 1970s were Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley, and Steve Kuhn. They were all equally unique pianists, but Steve Kuhn's aestheticism was what really attracted us.
　Steve is still alive and releasing new works, which is great news for fans, but his recent Concord and Venus albums are not satisfying for those who know the dangerously aesthetic Kuhn of the past. In the case of Steve Kuhn, his ECM works in the 1970s are probably the best.
　This album is his third ECM album, "Motility". I used to love this album and listened to it many times.  I often listened to A1 "The Rain Forest" with Steve Kuhn's sparkling piano and Steve Slagle's lyrical and beautiful flute, and A2 "Ocean In The Sky" where the piano starts  its passionate, undulating play and gradually takes on a rock tone.
　But I remember listening to the B-side more than that. Even now, listening to B1 "Deep Tango" again, the sensual theme melody on top of the tango-like rhythm gives me an overwhelming impact. Harvie Swartz's bass moves freely and Steve Kuhn's piano starts to growl with intense passion. The sensual theme repeated in unison is awsome.      
　The first half of the following B2 "Motility / The Child Is Gone" is an up-tempo song, with Michael Smith's delicate drumming and Harvie's bass running being the highlights. The second half is an introspective and visual piece with a cute theme that is attractive.  
　B3 "A Danse For One" is full of the charm of Kuhn's piano, and the last song B4 "Places Never Been" features Kuhn's piano exploding wildly, combining with Slagle's flute and Harvie's bass to create a grand finale.
　It's a satisfying 23 minutes for the listener. I think this work, including the A-side, can be described as a masterpiece. Recorded in 1977.☆☆☆☆☆
