If you've been reading my blog for a while, you’re probably familiar with the name Kobe Bryant, as I'm a huge fan of his and have mentioned him many times before.
このブログをしばらく読んでくださっていたら、コービー・ブライアントさんの名前をご存じでしょう。私は彼の大ファンで、これまでに何度も彼について言及してきました。
However, in case you haven't had a chance to read those previous articles, today let me write about who Kobe Bryant was.
しかし、以前の記事を読んでいただいていないかもしれないので、今日はコービー・ブライアントさんがどのような人物であったかを書きたいと思います。
Kobe Bryant was a former professional basketball player who dedicated himself to playing for the Los Angeles Lakers for twenty years, which is incredibly rare in the NBA. (Many people associate Michael Jordan with the Chicago Bulls, but even MJ played for a different team, the Washington Wizards, at the end of his career.)
コービー・ブライアントさんは元プロバスケットボール選手で、20年間にわたりロサンゼルス・レイカーズに尽力した選手です。NBAの世界では非常に珍しいことです。

During his twenty-year career, Kobe made lots of achievements.

He is also famous for having both of his jersey numbers, No. 8 and No. 24, retired by the Lakers.

You can't discuss Kobe Bryant without mentioning his competitive drive, never-say-die attitude, and relentless hard work.

Due to his playing style and physical resemblance, Kobe was often compared to his boyhood idol, Michael Jordan, who is also synonymous with a fierce desire to win.

As I mentioned, his competitive spirit was unmatched, and being frequently compared to MJ, who is believed to be the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) in basketball, Kobe always wanted to surpass MJ and be the best.

In the middle of his career, Kobe's strong desire to be the best led him to earning the nickname "Black Mamba," named after the super dangerous, poisonous snake known for killing its prey with one bite.
キャリアの途中、そのベストになりたいという強い想いは、「ブラックマンバ」というニックネームを得ることへとつながりました。これは、一撃で獲物を仕留めることで知られる非常に危険な毒蛇に由来しています。
This nickname perfectly captured the way he played, dealing serious damage to his opponents with his lethal moves.

While he continued aiming for the summit as a basketball player, at some point, he realized that determining who is the best is superficial because, no matter how many championships he won, everyone has different opinions.
バスケット選手として頂点を目指し続けながらも、ある時点で彼は、誰が最高かを決定することは表面的なものであり、何回優勝しても人々の意見はそれぞれ異なることに気づきました。
That’s when he began placing more emphasis on inspiring his younger teammates and leading them to become better players.

Around that period of time, following his nickname, Kobe coined the term "Mamba Mentality" to describe his mindset.

As someone who watched him play for many years and listened to him talk about this mentality, I consider it to be a mindset where you do what you truly love, continually strive to be better in that field, and, by doing so, inspire those around you.
長年彼のプレーを見てきた者として、そして彼のメンタリティについての話を聞いてきた者として、私はマンバメンタリティを、自分が心から好きなことをし、その分野において絶えず向上することを目指し、そして、そうすることで周囲の人々にインスピレーションを与える、そういう心構えだと捉えています。
And if you can do that, you also live by the Mamba Mentality.

Tragically, despite all his achievements, Kobe passed away in January 2020 in a helicopter accident.
悲劇的なことに、これまでのすべての功績にもかかわらず、コービーさんは2020年1月にヘリコプター事故で亡くなりました。
Last weekend, on Friyday the 23rd, was his birthday. If he were still with us, he would have turned 46 years old.
先週末の23日（金）は彼の誕生日でした。もし今も生きていれば、46歳になっていました。
The next day, August 24th, was Kobe Day because the date reminds us of his retired jersey numbers, 8 and 24.
翌日の8月24日はコービーデーでした。この日は彼の永久欠番、8と24を思い出させます。
Over those two days, I watched Kobe's videos and posted about him to celebrate and pay tribute to his legacy.
その二日間、私はコービーさんのビデオを見て、彼の功績を祝うために彼について投稿しました。
I believe Kobe continued to embody the "Mamba Mentality" until the very last minute of his life—no, he still does.
コービーさんは最後の瞬間まで「マンバメンタリティ」を体現し続けたと私は信じています。いや、今もなお体現し続けています。
As someone who has been deeply inspired by him, living by this mentality will always be my goal for the rest of my life.
