こんにちは。高校生のみなさんは、今、自分の進路についてどのように考えていますか？ 「センパイたちは、どうやってその進路を選んだり、その進路に向かうことが出来たのだろう？」と考えたことはありますか？
この連載では、さまざまなルーツを持つ高校生にインタビューして集めた進路体験談を紹介していきます。 みなさんの進路を決めるときのヒントになれば嬉しいです。

日本語習得について

・来日当初：
日本語は、ほぼ来日してから勉強をはじめた。
学校では、日本語で授業を受けることが難しい生徒に、「取り出し授業」（日本語指導員を派遣し、日本語の授業を１対１で提供する）があったが、受けなかった。そのため、授業全て同じように周りの生徒と一緒に受けた。
・日本語の勉強の工夫：
授業中に聞き取った単語やフレーズはメモし、辞書を引いて、ノートに書き写して覚えるようにした。
授業の前に、予習して、わからない単語は事前に調べた。
文法は、暗記ではなく、他人の会話を聞いて、その変形のルールを自分で掴んで、まとめて、覚えるようにした。
漢字は、漢字ドリルで勉強した。学校の漢字ワーク、市販のドリル（小学校１年生〜）を使って、暇な時に勉強した。

ターニングポイント
高校受験で志望校に全部落ちた。大学受験で挽回したい気持ちが強かった。
かかりつけの医者さんの影響で、医者を目指すようになった。そこから、医学部を目指して塾に通い、休みの日には一日中ずっと自習室で勉強した。
学校では友達を作らず、遊ばなかったので、高3の2022年5月、体調が悪く、メンタルヘルスもよくなかった。勉強が不可能になり、医学部の勉強を辞めた。自分は将来何をやりたいのかわからなくなった。
でも、大学には絶対通いたかったので、大学入試・受験方式・学校について調べ、オープンキャンパスや、学校の先生と面談もたくさんした。
リベラルアーツ、そして2年生までに専攻を決めなくて良い、自由に学べるICU（現在通っている大学）を知り、受験を決意。学校の先生から総合型選抜（AO受験）を勧められ、4か月前から準備をした。
進路希望の決定とそれからの準備
目指し続けてきた医学部の目標を諦めることは、とても勇気が必要だった。しかし、周りの大人や友達は、私の進路が最善となるように、きっと私の選択を尊重してくれる、願ってくれていると思い、他人の目を気にするより、自分の気持ちやキャパシティが大事だと学んだ。
やっておいてよかったこと
①自己分析：自分のこれまでのマイヒストリーを振り返り、節目ごとの自分の変化や気づき、自分にとって印象に残った出来事とそこから学んだことを整理する。自分をよりよく知ることができ、自分をアピールすることが上手になる。
②成績：学校の定期テストは絶対に最優先すること。成績はなるべく高くとると選択肢がひろがる。
③英語：英検・TOEFLを受検する。毎日ラジオを聞くなど、毎日英語に触れることが自分には合っていた。
④課外活動：自分が楽しいと思える活動、部活動でもボランティアでもバイトでもいい。
⑤大人に頼る：情報やサポートは、大人にたくさん頼ってきた。小論文や面接の練習も、先生としたり、自分から話しかけて、先生に自分を知ってもらう。
学んだこと「私は強みを持っている」
①自分は強みを持っている
気づけば、来日して日本語を習得して、学校にも通い続けることは、当たり前のように感じていたけど、自分の強みでもある。それを見つけられるきっかけが、入試、そして自己分析だった。
②失敗しても、やり直せる
私は高校受験も、大学受験もたくさんの失敗を繰り返した。しかし、それは「失敗」ではなく、「経験知」だとわかった。途中で変更していても、当たり前のことで、自信を無くさないで！
③周りの大人にとにかく頼る
入試の情報、サポートは全部大人のおかげでできた。自分の弱みを見せるのは悪いことではない。助けを求めよう。
④選択肢が増えるように色々なことに挑戦してみよう！
勉強だけじゃなくて、課外活動、学校の勉強、部活動、イベント、「やってみたいかも」と少しでも思うのであれば、やってみることをおすすめします！それが後になって、自分の大きな「ターニングポイント」になるかもしれません。多くの経験を積んで、色々な生き方を知ることになります！選択肢がたくさん増えます！
今の生活とこれからについて
今は、外国にルーツを持つ生徒の力になるよう、カタリバのRootsプロジェクトでメンターをやらせていただいています。大学で、高校で触れなかった哲学と政治学を学べて、とても楽しいです。これからは、就職でどの国、どの業種がいいのか全くわからないのですが、きっと「なんとかなる」と思い、毎日色々なこと、チャレンジを楽しむようにしています。

Hi to those readers who are currently going to high school in Japan, how are you thinking about your career path? Have you ever thought to yourself, "How did my seniors choose that career path, or how were they able to go down that path?"
In this series, we interview students with various backgrounds and introduce their experiences during high school. We would be happy if we could give you some hints when you are deciding your career path.
We also hope that supporters and those who are interested in children and young people with overseas roots will learn what they are thinking about as they pursue their careers. In this issue, we would like to introduce the career experience of W.S., who went from a private high school to a private university in Japan!

Came to Japan in April 2017 (in the middle of the second year of junior high school in China; dropped two grades and started over from the first year of public junior high school in Japan)
Japanese language acquisition
At the time of arrival in Japan: could only greet people.
When entering high school: N1 level.
At the time of high school graduation: Japanese junior-high school students level.
I started studying Japanese almost from the time I arrived in Japan. At school, there was a "take-out class" (a Japanese language instructor is dispatched to provide one-on-one Japanese lessons in Japanese and other classes) for students who have difficulty taking classes in Japanese, but I chose not to take it. I took all the classes like the other Japanese students.
I wrote down the words and phrases I heard in class, and from there I pulled up a dictionary and tried to memorize them by transcribing them in my notebook. Before class, I prepped the entire scope of the course and looked up unfamiliar words beforehand so that I would be able to understand them when they were spoken in class.
With grammar, I tried to listen to other people's conversations, grasp the rules of their transformations by myself, put them together, and memorize them.
As for studying kanji, I studied with kanji drills. I bought kanji work at school as well as commercial drills (from the first grade of elementary school) and studied them in my spare time.

Turning point
Having failed the high school entrance exam, I was determined to make up for it by taking the university entrance exam.
I became friends with my family doctor, and under his influence, I began to aspire to become a doctor. From there, I went to cram school and studied only science. On holidays, having spent all day long studying in the cram school's study room.
However, during that time, I did not make friends or have fun at school.
In May 2022, I was not feeling well and my mental health was not good. I couldn't study like I used to, and stopped studying for medical school. From that point on, I had no idea what I wanted to do in the future.
I definitely wanted to attend college, so I researched about college entrance exams, entrance examination methods, and schools, and went to many open campuses and meetings with school teachers.
When I learned about liberal arts and ICU (the university I am currently attending), where you don't have to decide on a major by your sophomore year and you can study freely, I decided to take the entrance exam. My school teacher recommended that I take the AO exam, and from the four months leading up to the exam, I prepared for the AO exam.
Deciding on my career path and preparation from then on
It took a lot of courage to give up on the goal of medical school that I had been aiming for. I thought that the adults and friends around me surely respected my choice and wished me the best in my career path, and I learned that my feelings and capacity were more important than worrying about what others thought.
Things I am glad I did
1. Self-analysis →I looked back on my history to date and organized the changes I have gone through and noticed at each milestone, as well as the events that left an impression on me and what I learned from them.
→This will help you to get to know yourself better and be better at presenting yourself.
2. Grades →Put the highest priority on regular school tests. Get as high grades as possible.
3. English →Take the Eiken and TOEFL exams. Students should be exposed to English by listening to the radio every day, etc.
4. Extracurricular activities →Even if I did not take the AO exam, I participated in activities that I was interested in. I participated in activities that I enjoyed, whether it was club activities, volunteer work, or part-time work.
5. Relying on the help of adults→I relied on adults for information and support. I practiced essays and interviews with teachers after school, talked to them myself, talked a lot, and let them get to know me.
What I learned
I have my own strengths
→I realized that coming to Japan, learning Japanese, and continuing to go to school were my strengths, even though I took them for granted. I am sure that my strengths are there, I just don't realize it. The entrance examination and self-analysis were the catalysts for me to find them.Even if I fail, I can always start over
→I had many twists and turns in my high school and university entrance examinations, and I repeated many failures. However, I realized that it was more about "experiential knowledge" than "failure". Of course, it is wonderful to keep trying until the end, but even if you change your course of study in the middle of the process, it is normal and you will never lose confidence.Rely on the adults around me as much as possible
→Adults helped me with all the information and support for the entrance exam. Showing your weakness is not a bad thing. Ask for help.Try different things to have more options!
→If you think even a little bit that you "might like to try" extracurricular activities, school studies, club activities, events, I recommend that you give it a try! It may become a big "turning point" for you later on. And you will gain a lot of experience and learn about different ways of life! You will have many more options there
About your life now and in the future
Right now, I am a mentor at Katariba's Roots Project to help students with foreign roots. I am enjoying studying philosophy and political science at university, which I was not exposed to in high school. I have no idea which country or industry I would like to work in, but I am sure that I will be able to "make it work," and I try to enjoy the many things and challenges I face every day.
A word of advice from W.S. to those reading this !
As a person with roots in a foreign country, I am sure you have struggled a lot so far to overcome the language and cultural barriers. That experience will surely become a wall and strength to protect you. Please do your best to make your experience known to many people and to follow the path you want to follow. I am sure that you are stronger than you thought you were and that the world around you is full of opportunities. Seize them and make the most of them!

高中入学考试失败后，我很想通过参加大学入学考试来弥补遗憾。 我和附近诊所的医生成了朋友，在他的影响下，开始立志成为一名医生。 从此，我上了补习班，只学理科。 一到节假日，我就整天泡在补习班的自习室里学习。
然而，在那段时间里，我没有交朋友，也没有娱乐，所以在 2022 年 4 月，也就是我读高三的时候，压力大到吃不下任何东西。去了好几家医院，发现都是因为压力太大。
2022 年 5 月，我身体不适，精神状态也不好。 变得无法学习了，我正式放弃了为考医所做的任何准备。
