Japanese roseの名を持つ色鉛筆の色の名前になった花とは

前回ご紹介したライラックは、3月28日の誕生花でした。偶然にも今日の主役のお花も同じ3月28日の誕生花と分かり、不思議なつながりを感じたのでした。

ふと、いつもと違う道を通って家に帰ってみたくなった日。何の気なしに曲がった道の角に、一重のヤマブキが咲いていました。

赤みがかった黄色の明るい色彩は夕闇迫る時間帯にもかかわらず、
くっきりとした輪郭で目に飛び込んできました。

色鉛筆や絵の具の色にも「やまぶき色」ってありますよね？私はきみどり色寄りの「レモン色」の黄色の方が好きでしたが、好みに反してやまぶき色を使うことが意外と多かった記憶があります。色鉛筆を順番に並べた時にも、レモン色とオレンジ色の間にさりげなく鎮座しているやまぶき色。茶色との相性も良くて、結局頻繁に使っていたのは、やまぶき色が身近な自然にある色だからなのかもしれません。

古くから日本に自生していて、万葉集にも多く登場します。ヤマブキの鮮やかな黄色は気品のある色とされ、貴族の装束にも好まれて用いられていました。その色は黄金に見立てられることもあり、江戸時代には賄賂の大判小判を「山吹」という隠語で呼んでいたそうです。

ヤマブキのエピソードで有名なのが、太田道灌と山吹娘の話。
太田道灌が狩りに出かけた先で突然の雨に見舞われた時、農家で蓑を借りようとしました。すると、農家の娘が蓑の代わりにヤマブキの枝を黙って差し出します。「自分が所望しているのはそんな枝ではなく、蓑だ」と娘に腹を立てた道灌は、そのままずぶ濡れになって帰っていきました。

道灌は、後に自分の無知を恥じることになります。
平安時代に詠まれた「七重八重花は咲けども山吹の実の一つだになきぞ悲しき」という歌になぞらえて、農家の娘が「実の」と「蓑」を掛け、貧しい家で蓑一つも無いことをヤマブキに例えていたのです。道灌は、自分の無知を恥じ、その後歌道に精進したそうです。

春の終わり、梅雨を迎えるこの時期に、ナチュラルな雰囲気の花を咲かせてくれるヤマブキは、美しい緑色の葉の色と明るいビタミンカラーのコントラストを見せてくれます。以前すりガラス越しにヤマブキの花を見たことがありますが、美しい色合いはまるで絵画のようでした。
ちなみに、海外では、ヤマブキを英語で“Japanese Rose”と呼んでいます。

さて、ヤマブキの花言葉は、
「気品」。
黄金にも例えられるヤマブキの輝かしい色からついた花言葉なのでしょう。

友人家族が、うさぎを飼いたいということで、うちのマメちゃんを見にきました。マメちゃんは相変わらずおっとりとしていて、友人のお嬢さんの足元でのんびり横になったり、手からスナックをもらったり。すっかり魅了された友人たち。家族が増える気配〜。私にとっては、またまた「うさ友」が増えそうで、嬉しい限り！

【Ichirin’s Floral Notes🌸 Yamabuki (Japanese Rose) Became the Name of a Japanese Colored Pencil】

One day, I felt like taking a different route home. At the corner of a road I don’t usually take, I found a single-flowered Yamabuki in bloom.

The bright, reddish-yellow color stood out clearly, even in the approaching twilight, drawing my eyes with its distinct outline.

You may have seen "yamabuki-iro" as a color name in colored pencils and paints if you grew up in Japan. I always preferred the yellowish "lemon color" closer to lime green, but I remember using "yamabuki-iro" surprisingly often despite my preferences. It sits subtly between lemon yellow and orange in a lineup of colored pencils. Its compatibility with brown made me reach for it often, perhaps because it’s a color naturally found in our surroundings.

Native to Japan since ancient times, Yamabuki appears frequently in the Manyoshu (an ancient anthology of Japanese poetry). Its vibrant yellow was considered a noble color, favored in the attire of aristocrats. Sometimes compared to gold, the word “Yamabuki” served as a euphemism for bribes in the form of large gold coins during the Edo period.

A famous Yamabuki story involves Ota Dokan※ and the Yamabuki maiden. Caught in sudden rain while hunting, Dokan sought a straw raincoat at a farmhouse. The farmer’s daughter silently handed him a Yamabuki branch instead. Angered, Dokan left, drenched.
Later, Dokan realized his ignorance. The girl’s gesture referenced a Heian-era poem about the lack of fruit on a Yamabuki tree, symbolizing poverty. Embarrassed by his ignorance, Dokan devoted himself to poetry thereafter.

In late spring, as the rainy season approaches, Yamabuki blooms with a natural charm, showcasing the contrast between its bright vitamin-colored flowers and beautiful green leaves. I once saw Yamabuki flowers through frosted glass; their lovely hues resembled a painting.
The flower language of Yamabuki is "elegance," inspired by its glorious, golden color.

※Ōta Dōkan (1432–1486) was a prominent Japanese samurai, poet, and military tactician of the Muromachi period. He is best known for constructing Edo Castle, which later became the foundation for the city of Tokyo. Dōkan was also a cultured individual, excelling in waka poetry and classical Chinese studies. His legacy includes not only his contributions to Japanese architecture and military strategy but also a famous anecdote involving a yamabuki (Japanese rose) and a poem, highlighting his wit and cultural refinement.

【Editor’s Note】 A friend’s family, interested in getting a rabbit, visited to see our Mame-chan. As always, Mame-chan was gentle, lounging by the friend’s daughter’s feet and accepting snacks from her hand. They were utterly charmed. I’m thrilled at the prospect of gaining another “rabbit friend”!
