だけど、あんなにず～っと風船の糸につかまっていたものだから、プーの両腕はすっかりこわばってしまって、1週間以上も空に向かってピンと伸びきったまんまでした。だから、ハエが飛んできて鼻先にとまるたびに、「プー」と吹き飛ばさなければならなかったのです。だから、思うに—はっきりとはわからないけどね—それが、いつも「プー」と呼ばれるようになった理由なんじゃないかな？

But his arms were so stiff from holding on to the string of the balloon all that time that they stayed up straight in the air for more than a week, and whenever a fly came and settled on his nose he had to blow it off. And I think—but I am not sure—that that is why he was always called Pooh.

Chapter 1の前半で、‘Winnie-the-Pooh sat down at the foot of the tree, put his head between his paws and began to think.’や ‘He put his head between his paws and thought very carefully.’のように、Poohの体の同じ部分が「前足」と表現されている箇所もあった。

他方、「まえがき」の中には、‘… and with a happy cry of "Oh, Bear!" Christopher Robin rushes into its arms.’と、ホッキョクグマの「腕」の中に飛び込んでいく、という描写がされている。

まず、このような表現の違いに注意を向け、それぞれの語がどんな場面で用いられているのかを考えてみると、より深く物語を理解することができる。ここでは、下に引用した挿絵に見られるように、風船の糸をつかんでいた「腕」として、より擬人化した視点で捉えているための ‘arms’という選択なのであろう。
