いまや，ミッションインポッシブル（Mission: Impossible）と言えば，トム・クルーズ主演のミッションインポッシブル・シリーズの映画と多くの人は思い浮かべるだろうが，もとはブルース・ゲラー（1978年に飛行機墜落事故で47歳で死去）原作のアメリカのテレビドラマ『スパイ大作戦』（1966年～73年まで放映）が原典である。
『スパイ大作戦』の中で，ドラマの中心となる組織がIMFである。世界銀行系列の国際通貨基金のIMF（International Monetary Fund）ではなく，実行不可能な指令のスパイ組織（Impossible Mission Force）のIMFである。IMFはアメリカ政府が直接手を下せない極秘任務を遂行するスパイ組織であり，ドラマの中では，毎回，アメリカ大統領の指令の名のもとに，IMF局長から「幸運を祈る。なお，このメッセージは5秒後に自動的に消滅する。」という決まり文句が文末に添えられ，各種の録音伝言媒体でIMFに指令内容が告げられるという脚本となっている。
1996年にトム・クルーズのミッションインポッシブルに引き継がれ，現在，7作目のデッドレコニング PART ONEまでが制作・公開されている。パラマウント・ピクチャーズによれば，第8作はタイトルの変更が現時点で告知されており，当初の予定よりも1年遅れの2025年5月に公開される予定である。
7作からなるミッションインポッシブル・シリーズの映画をすべて，あらためて観てみた。毎回，世界各地の舞台が登場するのだが，なかには日本人なのか，中国人なのか分からないアジア人が登場する。とりわけ，7作目のデッドレコニング PART ONEで登場する女殺し屋パリスというアジア人は謎の人物像である。主人公のイーサン・ハントに窮地で命を救われて，最後に恩返しをするというシナリオであるが，何か戦後の日本のレトリックを見るようで複雑な感情を抱いたのは，私だけであろうか。

Nowadays, when people think of Mission: Impossible, most imagine the Mission: Impossible film series starring Tom Cruise. However, the original source is the American TV drama "Mission: Impossible," created by Bruce Geller (who passed away in a plane crash at the age of 47 in 1978), which aired from 1966 to 1973.
In "Mission: Impossible," the central organization in the drama is the IMF. This IMF is not the International Monetary Fund, affiliated with the World Bank, but rather the Impossible Mission Force, a spy organization tasked with executing missions deemed impossible. The IMF is a secret spy organization that undertakes top-secret missions that the U.S. government cannot directly engage in. In the drama, every episode features a directive from the IMF director, given in the name of the U.S. President, ending with the iconic phrase, "Good luck. This message will self-destruct in five seconds," delivered through various recording media to convey the mission details to the IMF.
In 1996, the Mission: Impossible franchise was handed over to Tom Cruise, and currently, up to the seventh film, "Dead Reckoning Part One," has been produced and released. According to Paramount Pictures, the eighth film's title has been announced to change, and its release has been delayed by a year, now scheduled for May 2025.
I revisited the seven films of the Mission: Impossible series. Each installment features various global locations, but sometimes it is unclear whether certain Asian characters are Japanese or Chinese. In particular, the female assassin Paris, an Asian character appearing in the seventh film, "Dead Reckoning Part One," remains an enigmatic figure. The storyline where she is saved from a crisis by the protagonist Ethan Hunt and ultimately repays the favor evoked complex feelings in me, reminiscent of postwar Japanese rhetoric. Am I the only one who felt this way?
