9月5日 The Great Pretender
9月5日は親愛なるフレディ・マーキュリーの誕生日、存命なら78歳。
そのフレディ、生前のバースデーパーティーはすごかったらしい。
ある年、全米ツアー中のニューヨークに友人たちを招待、なんとコンコルドで送迎し、超一流ホテルのスイート全室を借り切って五日間続いたという。前夜祭、後夜祭どころの騒ぎじゃない約一週間のパーティーの費用は、総額約8000万円、シャンパンだけでも750万円！
別の年の誕生日には、スペインの空に花火で自分の名前を書かせてしまったり、高さ6m以上といわれるバースデーケーキまで発注したという話もある。
楽しいことなら金を惜しまないフレディは、ステージの終了後に必ずといって小さなパーティーを開いていたというし、オフの時も多くの老若男女を招いた乱痴気騒ぎのパーティーをたびたび行なってたようである。
楽しいことが好きというより、かなりの寂しがり屋だったのかもしれないな・・・
フレディのヒット曲に「The Great Pretender」というプラターズのカバーがあるが、フレディこそが"The Great Pretender"だったのではないかと思う。
仲間と騒ぐのが好きだったフレディは、隠れるように1991年11月24日、エルトン・ジョンらに看取られひっそりと死んでいった。HIVに感染していることをメディアに初めて公表した翌日だった。
