January 24, 2024: Italian （イタリア語）

When I read articles posted by other writers on the 'note', I tend to see ones about Italy. Whenever I saw them, I always read them with great interest. When I was in my 30s, I had been to Milan many times and Rome once on business. So I am still attached to the country and still have some memories in my mind. Fortunately, I had a lot of chances to talk with my Italian customer in Milan. It helped me to establish a very strong and good relationship with the customer's staff. I enjoyed a lot of talks with them day and night. Of course, I had a lot of serious discussions with them at the meetings. But I also had a lot of chances to talk with them at night as I was always invited to dinner. At the dinners, I enjoyed Italian food a lot. And I also tried to learn the Italian language from them at dinner. First, I learnt numbers from one to ten in Italian: uno, due, tre, quattro, chinque, sei, sette, otto, nove, dieci. When I learnt them for the first time, I was surprised to see how different they are from in French.: un, deux, troi, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix.
I also found a very interesting Italian word to say cheers or toast in English and kanpai in Japanese. In Italian, it is 'cin, cin' and is pronounced 'chin chin'. When I heard it for the first time, I burst out laughing and thought that it could not be used in Japan. The pronunciation reminded me of something else, a male sexual organ, in Japanese. When I described it to them, they knew it for the first time and laughed at it very much.

また、英語や日本語で乾杯と言う時のイタリア語がとても興味深かったです。イタリア語では「cin、cin」と言い、「チンチン」と発音します。初めて聞いたとき、爆笑すると同時に日本では使えないと思いました。その発音から、日本では別のもの、すなわち男性の性器を連想するためです。彼らに説明すると、大笑いしていました。
