May 12, 2023: Netherlands, Flowers, My Late Father-in-Law （オランダ、花、今は亡き義理の父）
Flowers are so popular in the Netherlands that the country is also known as the Land of Flowers. When I lived in the country, I saw a lot of flower shops everywhere. I was also able to buy flowers in other shops than flower shops. They were available even at supermarkets and petrol stations, too. And the flowers were cheaper than in Japan. So when I was invited for dinner by my boss, Dutch friends or neighbours, I always took flowers to them. As a result, I got accustomed to bringing flowers while I was living there. It was one of the biggest changes in myself. Until I moved to the country, I had no interest in flowers and had never been to a flower shop in Japan.
Flowers have grown to one of the Dutch main businesses. It is said to account for around sixty per cent of the world's production of flowers with bulbs like tulips, crocuses and hyacinths.
And it has one of the world's leading flower auctions in Aalsmeer, a Dutch town. It was just a ten-minute drive from my home. So we went to tour it when my late father-in-law came to visit from Japan. As he was a farmer, he was very interested in the facility and kept a close eye on what was going on there.
オランダは、花の国と言わるほど、花が生活の中に溶け込んでいました。花屋さんも至るところにありました。また、花は、花屋さんだけでなく、スーパーやガソリンスタンドでも売っていました。そして、花の値段も日本より手ごろでした。会社の上司、オランダ人友人や隣人に夕食に誘われると、必ず花を持参していました。そのおかげで、オランダにいる時は、花を持参するのが習慣になりました。これは、ボク自身の大きな変化の一つでした。オランダに行くは、花に興味はなく、花屋さんにいったこともありませんでした。
花は、オランダの主力産業になっています。チューリップを中心に、クロッカス、ヒアシンスなどの花卉（かき）の生産は世界の花市場の６割以上を占めていると言われています。
そして、アールスメールという街に世界も有数の花の卸売市場があります。この市場を、今は亡き義父がオランダに来た時に、見学したことがあります。農家をやっていた義父が、市場が近代化されていて、人が少ないのに驚いていたのを覚えています。
