April 26, 2023: Shop-Closing Law, Germany, Netherlands (閉店法、ドイツ、オランダ)
I have a lot of my favourite writers on Note. Among them is Dito-san, who lives in Germany. In one of his articles, he wrote about the shop-closing law in Germany. It seems that most of the shops are still closed on Sundays in Germany. I had the same experience when I lived in the Netherlands. It was about twenty-five years ago. Most of the shops in the Netherlands were closed on Sundays, too. It was on the second day when I started living there that I knew it.
The day I arrived there, I went to a house that my company had rented for me. But it was already early on a Saturday evening, and I had nothing to do, like go shopping. So I went to bed.
The next day was my first Sunday there. As I was eager to go shopping, I requested my colleague to take me to a supermarket. But I was told that it was impossible since all the supermarkets in the country were closed on Sundays. That was a surprise to me. I could not imagine that most stores were closed. But I was told that he could take me to one of the small grocery shops. They were called 'night shops' and opened even on Sundays. So we went to one of them. But as he said, it was too small to have enough choices to satisfy me. I reluctantly bought the bare necessities.
It was how I spent my first Sunday in the Netherlands.
Noteには、ボクのお気に入りのライターさんがたくさんいます。その内の一人が、ドイツ在住のDitoさんです。Ditoさん記事の中で、ドイツの閉店法に関する記事がありました。ドイツでは、いまだに、ほとんどの店が日曜日は閉店しているようです。ボクも同じような体験を25年くらい前にオランダでしました。当時は、オランダでも日曜日になると、大半の店が閉まっていました。そのことを知ったのは、オランダについた日の翌日のことでした。
オランダに着いた日に会社が借りてくれた家に行きました。でも、その時は、すでに土曜の夕方だったので買い物などができず、寝るしかありませんでした。
翌日が、オランダでの初の日曜日でした。買い物に行きたかったので、同僚にスーパーに連れて行ってほしいと頼んだところ、「オランダでは日曜日はどの店も閉まっているので、無理」と言われました。これを聞いたときは驚きでした。日曜日は、ほとんど店が閉まるなんて想像できませんでした。でも、小さな食料品店ならいけるといわれたので、そこに連れて行ってもらいました。この店は「ナイト・ショップ」といわれる店で、日曜日でも開いていました。でも、品ぞろえはよくありませんでした。しかないの、最低限のものを買いました。
これが、ボクのオランダでの最初の日曜日の過ごし方でした。
