June 23, 2024: Stye（ものもらい）
I have had a sty on my right eye, and the eye is swollen. I am not sure why I got it. But it is probably because I have changed the way I do stretches. I began to walk in my flat with a tube wrapped around my legs between my knees and my hips. In the beginning, I used a tube with a low intensity. But it seemed to be too weak to satisfy me. And I changed the one with a little stronger intensity. It seemed to be so strong for me that I had slight difficulty walking with the tube. But I thought that my legs would get stronger and I would be able to walk much better as I had continued to walk with the tube. So, I continued it and then, I began to feel some improvement in my walking and I was sure that the more I walked with the tube, the much better my gait would improve. But one day, I felt something wrong with my right eye and found the sty. I seemed to do the training too much. Today is the fifth day since I found the sty, but I see no sign of recovery. I seem to need time to recover from it.
The sty has a lot of different nicknames in different parts of Japan. On the outskirts of Tokyo, it is called Monomorai. But in Kyoto, it is called Meibo and in Osaka, it is called Mebachiko. I still remember very well that my Osakan friends did not undertand the word of Meibo when I told them that I suffered from the sty. Among them is Monomorai, which is the most common, followed by Mebachiko and Meibo.
I am very curious to see if there are countries, like Japan, that use a lot of different names for a disease.
右目に「ものもらい」ができて、目が腫れています。できた正確な理由はわかりません。でも、ストレッチのやり方を変えたことが原因のようです。足に巻いて（膝と腰の中間）、家の中を歩くようにしました。最初のうちは、強度が弱いチューブを使っていたのですが、弱すぎて満足できませんでした。そこで、もう少し強度の強いものに変えてみました。強すぎたようで、チューブをつけて歩くのが少し大変でした。でも、チューブを使って歩き続けているうちに、足が強くなり、もっとうまく歩けるようになるだろうと思っていました。そこで、これを続けた結果、歩きに改善が見られるようになり、チューブをつけて歩けば歩くほど、歩き方は改善されるに違いないと確信するようになりました。でも、ある日、右目に異変を感じ、「ものもらい」に気付きました。トレーニングのやりすぎだったようです。今日で5日目ですが、回復の兆しはありません。時間がかかりそうです。
「ものもらい」は、日本各地でさまざまな呼び名があります。東京近郊では「ものもらい」といいますが、京都では「めいぼ」と呼ばれ、大阪では「めばちこ」と言います。大阪の友人たちに、「めいぼう」に罹ったといっても理解してもらえなかったことを今でもよく覚えています。呼び名の中では、「ものもらい」が一番多く、次いで「めばちこ」、「めいぼう」と続くようです。
日本のように一つの病気に名前を使う国があるのか知りたいものです。
