July 21, 2024: Say ‘Nyan’ （ニャントナク）

Cats that say ‘nyan’ in Japanese. They can be found anywhere, not only in Japan but also in other areas. They are so loved by people that they are one of the most loved pets in the world.
But I have had no close connection with them yet. Of course, I have seen and still see a lot of cats. I very often see them walking around alone or with their owner and lying on the ground.
But I have never held or petted them in the last 30 years. I do not know why. But I do not get attached to them. It does not mean that I do not like pets or animals. Or rather, I like them. I used to take my aunt’s dog for a walk. I took it for a walk every evening for about two years. We loved each other very much and when I was late to pick it up, it would bark to call me. But we had to break up in 2 years because I moved to a new house.
I also love to go to a zoo. About 10 years ago, I went to the Ueno Zoo and enjoyed watching a lot of animals. Among them was a whalebill, which attracted me the most. I love to see it standing very still. I also like to see tigers and lions.
Further, I love to watch TV programmes or on-demand documentaries about animals, my favourite of which is the BBC’s.
But I have not been able to get attached to cats. They seem to give me the cold shoulder. And they seem to have no interest in building a relationship with me.
I am ready to have such a relationship with them. Give me their signals to start it with their usual calls, 'nyan'!

　「ニャン」と鳴く猫。猫は、日本だけでなく、世界中どこにでもいます。猫は、世界中で一番愛されているペットの一つです。
　でも、ボクは、猫と縁がありませんでした。もちろん、たくさんの猫を見てきたし、今も見ています。一人で歩いていたり、飼い主と一緒に歩いていたり、地面に寝そべっていたりするのをよく見かけます。
　でも、この30年、猫を抱いたり撫でたりしたことは一度もありません。理由はわかりません。愛着が湧かないのです。ペットや動物が嫌いなわけではありません。むしろ好きなほうです。叔母の犬をよく散歩に連れて行きました。２年ほど毎晩散歩に連れて行きました。お互いに、とても愛し合っていて、ボクの迎えが遅れると、吠えてボクを呼んでいたものでした。でも、ボクが引っ越したので、この関係も2年で終わりました。
　動物園に行くのも大好きです。10年ほど前、上野動物園に行き、たくさんの動物を見て楽しみました。その中で一番惹かれたのがハシビロコウです。じっと立っている姿が好きなんです。トラやライオンも好きです。
さらに、動物に関するテレビ番組やオンデマンドのドキュメンタリーを見るのも好きで、なかでもBBCのものがお気に入りです。
　でも、猫には愛着が湧きません。猫は、そっけない感じがし、ボクと関係を築くことに関心がなさそうです。
　ボクは、彼らと関係を築く用意はあります。いつもの「ニャン」という声で、関係構築を始めるサインを送ってもらいたいものです！
