September 1, 2024: Poor Subjects （不得意科目）

In a junior high school, I was very good at geography. I liked it very much at that time. I love to read a world atlas, which inspired me to imagine what each country was like. I also liked to imagine how people lived in each country. So, I got good marks in the geography tests. And I had never been beaten in the same grade.
But it was the only subject I was proud of in the school. I was very bad at other subjects. I liked English but was not good at it. In the beginning, I could not even spell my name out in English. Looking back, I did not make enough efforts to get better.
What was worse was maths. I hated it. In particular, I had bad chemistry with a maths teacher in the first grade. I could not understand what she was describing. The chemistry was so bad that I often had to go to the toilet. Every time, I had to ask the teacher to let me go to the toilet during the class. And when I came back from the toilet, I was made to stand at the back of the classroom. The teacher was replaced in the second grade, but nothing has changed in the subject. In the third grade, the teacher was relaced again. Then, my maths saw a small improvement, but was still below the average.
I was also bad at two other subjects: science and Japanese literature. All in all, geography was the only subject I enjoyed in the school. The poor performance came from the fact that I had no interest in and no desire to get good marks at other subjects.

　中学校では地理が得意でした。当時は地理が大好きでした。世界地図をみるのが好きで、みながらそれぞれの国がどんなところかを想像するのが好きでした。また、それぞれの国の人たちはどんな暮らしをしているのかを想像するのも好きでした。おかげで、地理のテストの成績はよかったです。同じ学年で負けたことはありませんでした。
　でも、これが学校の中で唯一誇れる科目でした。他の科目はとても悲惨でした。英語は好きでしたが、上手ではありませんでした。最初の頃は、自分の名前を英語で綴ることさえできませんでした。今思えば、努力が足りなかったのだと思います。
　もっとひどかったのは数学でした。数学は大嫌いでした。特に中1の時の先生との相性は最悪でした。先生の言っていることが理解できなかったのです。相性が悪すぎて、よくトイレに行きたくなりました。毎回、授業中にトイレに行かせてもらい、トイレから戻ると、教室の後ろに立たされました。2年生になると先生は代わりました。でも、何も変わりませんでした。3年生になると、また先生が代わりました。その後は、少し良くなりましたが、それでも平均以下でした。
　他の理科や国語も苦手でした。おおむね、学校で唯一楽しかった科目は地理だけでした。成績が悪かったのは、他の科目に興味がなく、いい成績を取ろうという気がなかったからです。
