May 3, 2023: Currencies in Europe (欧州の通貨)
When I was a salesman for overseas markets, I used to fly around Europe a lot on business. I loved travelling on business to discuss with my customers. But it was not as easy as I thought to travel around Europe. This was due to currencies. When I lived in the Netherlands, European countries had their own currencies, such as the guilder for the Netherlands, the lira for Italy and the peseta for Spain. So when I travelled on business, I always had to waste my time on money exchanges. I was very busy with them as I had been travelling to fifteen European countries. For instance, I had travelled from my country of habitual residence, the Netherlands, to several European countries in a week. It was Italy that I first left for at that time. So I first changed my Dutch guilders into Italian lira. Then, after the meeting with my Italian customer, I flew to Spain. Then, I had to change my Italian lira and Dutch guilders into Spanish pesetas. I had done this countless times in Europe. As a result, I was made to keep hundreds of non-Dutch coins at home. Eventually, I donated them at a Dutch airport just before boarding a flight back to Japan.
That was an old story about twenty-five years ago. Now, everything has changed in Europe. These European countries have abolished their currencies and have adopted a single currency, the euro. As a result, European travellers no longer need to exchange their monies. It must be helpful to save time and money. Or rather, almost no Europeans are likely to use cash. They must be using electronic payments. Electronic payments are much more widespread in Europe than in Japan.
ボクが海外営業をしていた時は、欧州域内を飛び回ったものです。お客さんとの打ち合わせのために出張するのは好きでしたが、欧州内の出張は苦労もありました。欧州各国には自国通貨があったのです。オランダに住んでいたころは、オランダの通貨はギルダー、イタリアはリラ、そしてスペインはペセタといった具合でした。そのおかげで、出張するときは、いつも空港で両替をしなければなりませんでした。当時は、欧州の15か国を担当したいたので、両替に大忙しでした。
例えば、住んでいたオランダから1週間で数か国を出張することがありました。その時は、最初にイタリアを訪れました。この場合、まず、オランダ・ギルダーをイタリアのリラに両替します。そして、その後、スペインへ移動したときに、ギルダーとリラをペセタにまた両替しました。こんなことを、数えきれないくらいしました。その結果、家には何百ものギルダー以外の硬貨がたまりました。結局、帰国する直前にこれらの硬貨を空港で寄付しました。
これは25年前の古い話です。欧州も今は様変わりしています。欧州各国は自国通貨を廃止し、ユーロに統一しました。おかげで、旅行者は両替の必要がなくなり、無駄な時間が省けているはずです。いやそれどころか、欧州では現金なんて使う人はほとんどいないかもしれません。代わりに欧州では日本以上に普及している電子決済が使われているはずです。
