【Native English Diary】5日目～新宿御苑でピクニック🌸

皆さんいい週末過ごせましたか？
最近のアメリカの帰省の話１日だけ休んで、今日はこの間新宿御苑でピクニックしてきた話をしたいと思います😊

Day 5

I know I've been reminiscing a lot about my trip to America earlier this year, but for today's diary I want to talk about something a bit more recent - this weekend's trip to Shinjuku Gyoen. (reminisce = 振り返る)

Believe it or not, it was my first time ever to go to Shinjuku Gyoen! 
※「Believe it or not」は「実は」という意味。直訳すると、「信じなくても、実は〇〇」というイメージです！ネイティブはよく使います！

I came to Tokyo around the start of the pandemic, so I found it kind of difficult to get over there.

Unfortunately we couldn't go during the week of cherry blossoms because the reservations were full. But luckily, there were a lot of beautiful flowers blooming and lots of great spots for a picnic.

So what did we bring to eat at our picnic?
In America, people usually bring things like sandwiches and fruits.
Maybe in Japan most people imagine eating obento at a picnic.

Well actually… recently, me and my boyfriend are obsessed with getting McDonald's for a picnic🤣 (obsessed = はまってる)

Last week, we had McDonald's at Yoyogi Park. 

I got an egg cheeseburger and Kazuki got a chicken cheeseburger.
In Japan, they call these "eguchi" (エグチ) and "chikichi" (チキチ).

I was talking to Kazuki about how in Japanese things are often abbreviated like this. (abbreviate = 略す) 
Even McDonald's is shortened to マック in Japanese. But be careful, because you can't shorten to "Mc" in English!!

I like that words are often shortened like this in Japanese. 
So, we invented a new word for our "McDonald's picnic". We called it ピクマ! What do you think? 🤣

Anyways, for our picnic we chose a nice spot and relaxed for awhile.

We were a bit disappointed to find the park closed so early at 4:30pm!
Make sure you got early if you want to enjoy the whole park.

After eating, we cleaned up and walked around the gardens.
There's so many different places to explore on the grounds, but we loved looking at the huge trees.
