大学教員と大学職員。

　相変わらずの猛暑ですが、みなさんいかがお過ごしでしょうか。私はなるべく汗をかかないように部屋でじっとしています。

　さて、相も変わらず事務局職員と小競り合いが続く毎日です。今日も突然鍵を至急返せとメールで唐突に指示がきました。私が赴任する前は、ほとんど放置状態だったところを学生と一緒に掃除して、使えるようにしてからもう何年も使用してきたものです。ところが、急に返せというから訳がわかりません。最近どうも事務局職員から嫌われているのか、次から次へと禁止事項が課せられているのです。もちろん大学として何らかの理由があると思いますのでそれを一言説明してくれたらこちらもある程度納得できるのですが、「ルールですから。」や「前例がありませんから。」という言葉しか伝えられないのです。

　こういうコミュニケーションの取り方ではとても信頼関係を醸成することはできないと思いますが、みなさんはどう思われますか？誤解を恐れずに発言しますが、大学内において教員の方が職員より圧倒的に上位のポジションにいると考えています。なぜなら、まず給与水準が全く違います。また、対外的な交渉や大学のＰＲは教員によるところが大きいと思います。さらには、学生の対応も圧倒的に教員の方が豊富にかつ適切に実行していると私は自負しています。これだけの業務をこなしているのだから、大学職員はそれを邪魔せずに応援する立場であるべきだと私は考えていますが、どうやら大学職員側はそう思っていないようです。

　実際、うちの大学の職員の離職率は高い方だと思います。ある部署はこの１０年間で１３人の正職員が退職したと聞きました。つまり、１年で1人以上辞めている計算です。一方でその部署の管理職は全く変わっていません。こんな完全に硬直化している組織では、若い人はさっさと見限ってよそを移りたくなるものよくわかります。逆に早く辞めてほしい人がなかなか辞めてくれないので、どんどん組織が陳腐化しているような気がします。そのため私はなるべく極力近づかないようにしています。

　この人たちを一掃したいという気持ちはありますが、実際には何も反論せずに事務局の指示に黙って従っています。大学の一教員がいくら声を上げたところで、結局は何も変わらないことは歴史が証明してくれています。私には大事な学生たちがいるので、それで十分幸せだと最近考えるようになってきました。つまり、私は未来の希望を育んでいるのであって、決して墓守をしているのではないだと。

　ついついうちの職員のことを憐みの目で見てしまいますが、これで私の精神の健全性が保てているのであれば、必要悪だと思っています。学生たちとは事務局の一部を仮想敵国として共闘しているので、これはこれで社会の仕組みや人間の心理を知るためのよい教材として扱うようにしました。

　これから大学教員になる人は、大学職員は決して味方ではないということを肝に銘じてください。そして、職員の生態系を脅かすことなく、こちらは学生と新たな生態系をつくりだしていくという強い気概がある人になってほしいと思います。

University faculty and staff.

It's as hot as ever, but how is everyone doing? I stay in my room trying not to sweat as much as possible.

Now, there are still daily skirmishes with the office staff. Today, too, I was suddenly instructed by email to return the key immediately. I have been using it for many years now, after my students and I cleaned and made it usable in a place that was almost neglected before I left. But I don't understand it because you asked me to return it suddenly. I guess the office staff doesn't like me these days, because one prohibition after another has been imposed on me. Of course, as a university, I think there is some reason for this, so if you could explain it in one word, I would be somewhat satisfied, but the only words that can be conveyed are "It's a rule." and "Because there's no precedent."

I don't think this kind of communication can foster trust, what do you think? Without fear of misunderstanding, I am of the opinion that faculty members are in an overwhelmingly higher position than staff members in the university. Because, first of all, the salary level is completely different. I also think that external negotiations and university PR are largely due to the faculty. Furthermore, I am confident that teachers are overwhelmingly more generous and appropriate in dealing with students. I think university staff should be in a position to support them without interrupting them because they are doing so much work, but apparently they don't think so.

In fact, I think the staff turnover rate at our university is on the high side. I heard that one department has lost 13 full-time employees in the last 10 years. That's more than one person quitting in a year. On the other hand, the management of the department has not changed at all. In such a completely rigid organization, it's easy to see how young people are tempted to give up and move elsewhere. On the other hand, I feel that the organization is becoming more and more obsolete because people who want me to quit early are not quitting easily. So I try to stay away from it as much as possible.

These people want to clean up, but they are silently following the instructions of the office without actually arguing anything. History has proven that no matter how much a university faculty member speaks up, nothing will change in the end. I've recently come to think that I'm happy enough because I have important students. In other words, I'm fostering hope for the future, not being a grave keeper at all.

I can't help but look at our staff with pity, but if this keeps my mental health intact, I think it's a necessary evil. I have a part of the Secretariat with the students as a virtual enemy, so I tried to treat this as a good teaching tool to understand the structure of society and human psychology.

If you are going to be a university teacher, keep in mind that university staff are never on your side. And I want him to be someone who has a strong will to create a new ecosystem with students without threatening the ecosystem of the staff.
