ワーウィック城 - Warwic Castle

イースター休暇の始まりに早起きして、子供たちとマリルボーンの駅へ向かいました。
北に向かうチルターン鉄道、シートのテクスチャがどことなくシャーロック・ホームズを彷彿とさせる。
無料Wifiと電源フル装備。座ったまま後ろに手を伸ばせば、椅子の裏の届くところにゴミ箱もあるというのも機能性でいいね。
子どもたちは、今回の遠征のおともに小さいイルカを選びました。四国水族館で出会った「もち」とソレントで出会った「いる」。一通り会話させた後は、それぞれ持ってきた本を読みはじめ。
車窓の羊や馬を眺めたりしながら、目的地はワーウィック城。英国に数あるお城のなかでも「子連れで行きたい城ナンバー・ワン」らしいです。
ルートを調べたら、最寄り駅から徒歩15分だけど、バスで城のすぐそばまで行けそうなので、一つ手前の駅で降りました。バス停裏の運河には白鳥がいました。観光客にたらふく餌を与えられているケンジントンの白鳥に比べ、ホッソリしています。
ダブルデッカーの二階から初めて訪れる街の雰囲気を眺めていくのも結構好きなんです。英国のかわいい田舎町は晴天に映えます。
バス停を降りて5分くらい歩きます。遠くから見て「あれがお城かな」と思ったやつはただの街の中の時計塔でした。古い都市なんだね。
お城の入場料は、ネットで買ったほうがお得だよ。
住宅街を抜けてエントランスをくぐると広い公園。外からは見えなかったけと、大きな塔と城壁がどーんと鎮座しています。
弓矢体験コーナーは、追加£6でした。ヨーヨーは珍しく「やりたい」と言って、貯めていたお小遣いを使ってチャレンジしました。
川沿いの広場では中世のドタバタ劇をしてました。みんな思い思いに立ったり座ったりして対岸の舞台を眺めます。猛禽ファンとしては本当はこの後のファルコニーを見たかったんだけど、タイミング的に見逃してしまった。
広い庭のあちこちにファストフードのキオスクがあります。小腹が減ったところで、フィッシュ＆チップスを買って、木陰のベンチで食べました。
ちゃんとしたカフェもあります。そこには入らなかったけど、手前の英国式庭園には10羽ほど、雄の孔雀が放し飼いにされていました。
日向ぼっこする孔雀の姿さながらに、植木が刈り込まれていました。
迷路コーナーでは、子供たちがピンポン玉のように駆けてってしまうので、私が迷子になりました。
スタンプラリーなど、子供が楽しめる仕掛けがあちこちにあります。
城壁の一角をなす要塞にのぼると、美しい田園風景が眺められました。この近くにあるStratford Upon Avonという村は、シェークスピア生誕の地として有名です。いつかそちらも大人旅で行ってみたい。
広い庭や城壁をぶらぶら歩いて回れる開放的な雰囲気、テイストは全然違うけど、故郷岡山の後楽園を思い出しました。
北端の塔に上る入り口を見つけて足を踏み入れると、その先は細長い螺旋階段が延々と500段も続いていました。ぐるぐる、狭くて暗くて一方通行。塔の上は素晴らしい眺めでしたが、高所恐怖症気味の私は写真を撮り損ね。
赴くままに冒険できるのがドラクエみたい！と喜ぶ子供たち、売店で木の剣を買いました。こんなの欲しくなっちゃうあたり、お兄ちゃんもまだ9歳。
それから、大広間を中心とした城内を一巡りしました。特徴的なのは、歴史上の人物を模した等身大の蝋人形があちこちに配置されて、中世の様子を伝えているところです。晴れの日だったからいいけど、陰鬱で寒い雨の日にはちょっと怖いかも。
悪名高いヘンリー８世と６人の妻たちが一堂に会する一角も。誰だこんなシュールな企画したの・・・
広い敷地の一角では、小さい子供たち向けにドラゴン・スレイヤーのスクールやナイト・レッスンも開催されていました。遠くの小さな的を射るデモをしてくれる弓矢の名人や、小さいベビー・ドラゴンを抱いたパペット使い、中世装束の馬や騎士なども敷地をうろうろしていて、一緒に写真に収まってくれます。
後で知ったけど、このお城はマダム・タッソー（蝋人形館）、レゴランド、シーライフ（水族館）などを傘下にもつマリーン・エンターテイメント・グループの管理らしいのです。だから、ファミリー向けアミューズメント・パークとして仕上がっているんですね。今までいろんな英国のお城を訪問してきたけど、子どもたちの満足度はピカ１だったようです。
帰り、６時前にメリルボーンにつく丁度よい電車に乗ろうとしたら、英国に来て初めて経験するような激混みで、１時間半、ずっと立つことになったのは計算外でした。子どもたちは通路にシートをひいて座って寝ていました。マイカーで来て現地待ち合わせして遊んだ友達家族も、帰りは渋滞で３時間近くかかったって言ってたから、イースター休暇にこの城に行くのは、ゴールデンウィークに東京から清里に行くようなものなのかもしれません。繁忙期にロンドンから日帰りを企画する人は、ちょっとピークの時間帯を外すか、迂回路(チルターンは１時間に一本しかないので、オックスフォードに出てGWRとかのほうが本数も多くて空いてるはず)をとるほうが楽かも。でも、それを差し引いても大満足の休日でした。

One sunny Easter day, we woke up early and hurried to Marylebone station. The seat texture of Chiltern Railways reminded me of the famous ditective somehow. I found the train that was fully equipped with free Wi-Fi and power outlets. The seats even had a functional trash can within reach behind them.
The kids chose small dolphins to accompany them on this expedition. They were "Mochi" from the Shikoku Aquarium and "Iru" from Sorrento. After a chatty chat, they each started reading their favourite books.
We saw peaceful sheep and cows from the window. Our destination was Warwick Castle, which is heard to be the "number one castle to visit with children" among the many castles in the UK!
When I looked up the route on my mobile, it was a 15-minute walk from the nearest station. I chose an alternative route to get off at the station before and take a bus to get closer to the castle. Children greeted swans on the canal behind the bus stop. They seemed to be slimmer than the swans in Kensington Garden, who are always well-fed by tourists.
I like looking out the atmosphere of a new city from the second floor of a double-decker bus. The lovely English countryside looks great in the April sunshine.
What I misunderstood as a part of the castle from a distance, was just a clock tower in the middle of the city. It is an old city.
After passing through the residential area, we entered a large garden. The large tower and castle walls were not visible from the outside, but they were now standing there in front of us.
The archery experience costs an additional £6. My boy wanted to try it and paid for it out of his own allowance.
There was a medieval slapstick comedy show in the square by the river. Everyone stood or sat as they pleased and watched the stage on the opposite bank. As a bird lover, I regret that I missed the falconry show afterwards.
There are many kiosks all over the large garden. When we had the appetite, we got fish and chips and enjoyed them on a bench in the shade.
About 10 male peacocks are roaming freely in front of the Garden Cafe. We found some topiaries were trimmed as peacock shapes basking in the sun.
I got lost in the maze corner because the kids ran around like ping-pong balls. There were stamp rallies and other tricks for kids to have fun everywhere.
I could see a beautiful rural landscape when we climbed up to the fortress that formed part of the castle walls. The nearby village of Stratford-Upon-Avon is famous as the birthplace of Shakespeare. I want to go there someday… perhaps as an adult-only trip.
The open and cozy atmosphere reminded me of Korakuen in my hometown of Okayama, although the taste was completely different from that of the Japanese garden.
When the kids found the entrance to the north tower and stepped inside, I found the spiral staircase extremely long, narrow, and dark. (It continued for 500 steps…it's one way!) The view from the top of the tower was amazing, but I forgot to take a picture because I'm afraid of heights.
After that, we went around the Great Hall. What is unique about the castle is that life-size wax figures of historical characters are placed here and there to simulate the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. I thought they could be a little scary on a gloomy, cold, rainy day.
There is also a corner where the notorious Henry VIII and his six wives are gathered together. Who on earth came up with such a surreal idea?
We saw dragon slayer schools and knight lessons took place for small children. My kids got wooden swords at the souvenir shop. There were also master archers who gave demonstrations of shooting at small targets in the distance, a puppeteer with a small baby dragon which is so elaborate that some small children seemed to believe it was REAL, and horses and knights in medieval costumes who wandered around the grounds and let us take memorious pictures.
This castle is designed as a family-friendly amusement park managed by the Merlin Entertainment Group, which also owns Madame Tussauds, Legoland, and Sea Lifes. We've visited many castles in the UK before, but this one seemed the most satisfying for the children.
On the way back, the train to Marylebone was so crowded that we had to stand for an hour and a half. Children spread out sheets in the aisle and slept as sitting. My friend's family, who came by car and met us there, also said they faced a terrible traffic jam going back home. The urban traffic problem on vacation seems common between London and Tokyo.
If you're planning a day trip from London during peak season, it might be easier to avoid peak times or take alternative routes (there's only one Chiltern train per hour, so it might be easier to detour to Oxford and take the GWR, which has more trains).
However, it was a very satisfying day for us after all.
