【怪談】魔女裁判

魔女であると容疑をかけられた人間は
まず審問官の前に引き出されることから始まる。

まず告発文の朗読。

内容は、たとえば胎児を殺して食ったとか、
魔法の秘薬を作ったとか、呪いをかけて災いを招いたとか。

容疑者は、私は魔女ではありません、陰謀だ、
などと絶叫するが、なにを言っても無駄である。

悪魔はお前たちの方だ、などと毒づく者もいる。

しかし、それは教会にはむかう悪魔の言葉であると判断され、
そのまま拷問台に送られるのだった。

審問によって自白しなければ、次は拷問。

被告は裸にされ、きつく縛られて宙釣りにされた。
その際、苦痛を高めるために、足には錘をぶら下げられる。

そして、体中くまなく点検され、証拠探しが行われる。
証拠とは、悪魔のマークと呼ばれる刻印。

悪魔との性交時につけられ
悪魔に対する忠誠心をあらわすものとされる。

あざ、いぼ、ホクロなどが悪魔との接触による痕跡とされ
魔女と断定する有力な決め手とされた。

それでも発見されない場合
咽に棒を突っ込んで胃の中のものをすべて吐かせる。

さらに大量の水を飲ませたうえ浣腸までして排便させ
大便と吐瀉物を探索するのだった。

魔女を泳がすこともよく行われた。
被告の頭や手足を縛り池に放り込むのである。

魔女は水よりも軽い超自然的な存在と考えられ
被告が浮けば有罪で魔女だと見なされた。

沈んで溺死すれば無罪ということになる。
いずれにせよ、被告は生き延びることはできないのだった。

自白を強要するための拷問には様々なものがあった。

鉄製の長靴が履かされ
靴と足のわずかな隙間にくさびが打ち込まれる。

第一撃で鮮血が噴出し、あまりの痛みに受刑者は絶叫する。
第三撃目で膝の骨は砕かれて骨の髄が飛び散ったという。

魔女の椅子という拷問もあった。

尻を乗せる部分に穴の開いた鉄製の椅子に座らされ
その下からロウソクであぶられる。

陰毛や肛門、尻の肉が焼けただれて恐ろしい苦痛を伴い
排便も満足にできぬような哀れな体と成り果てる。

水責め、指つぶし、目つぶし、舌抜き、その他
ありとあらゆる恐ろしい拷問が行われた。

ほとんどの人間は、一時的に苦痛を逃れたいがため
ありもしないことを自白した。

自白すれば、受刑者は魔女ということになり
生きたまま火刑に処せられることになるのだった。
