Do not stop writing

The other day, my supervisor told me "Do not stop writing if you want to continue your research.". This was not precisely what he said to me, but roughly like that. Why did he tell me that? It would be pointless if there is no context here, so I will give you a long context.

I am a Master student of linguistics, and I am about to graduate from university. At first, I thought I was going to continue my study, and so I was thinking of going to a Ph.D. Here is a question I inquired myself at that time(= the time I became a second-year student in the Master program). Do I really want to continue to study? At that time, I could not answer this question because I simply did not know whether I could survive in academia. Also, I was not really sure whether I had a sufficient capability to expand a boundary of human knowledge. In other words, I could not convince myself that I was good at doing academic research in order to keep producing lots of work like other researchers. Therefore, I came to this conclusion: I needed to start looking for a job (=job hunting). Luckily, I found a full-time job, and from the following month, I will work at a company.

However, as time has proceeded, I have had a feeling that I want to continue to do research. A million-dollar question is the following: Is it possible to do research at the same time I work at the company? How would you answer this question? Or how would you think about this question? Do you think you could do it? Yes or No. If yes, why is that? On the other hand, if no, why no?

An answer that I have right now is I REALLY DO NOT KNOW. Thus, I needed to figure out whether this is possible mentally and physically. However, while attempting to figure this out, would you have nothing to do???? Certainly, I have. That is I NEED TO KEEP WRITING IN ENGLISH, which is connected to the earlier sentence.

If you decided to leave academia, but you still want to pursue a Ph.D. or perhaps Master degree, do not stop practicing what you want to do. This is the takeaway message from this blog.
