【Manga】One Piece
Hi, This is Pearl! ♡
Today, I'll be introducing my favorite manga "One Piece"; a Japanese shonen manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda.
One Piece is one of the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, estimated to have generated more than $21 billion in total franchise revenue, from the manga, anime, films, games and merchandise. As of May 2020, the manga had over 473 million copies in circulation in 43 countries worldwide, making it the best-selling manga series in history. It has also set the Guinness World Record for "the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author".
The series follows the adventure of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew of pirates named the Straw Hat Pirates, as they explore the world to find the titular treasure known as "One Piece" and proclaim himself the King of the Pirates.
When I first started reading the manga, I honestly didn't expect to get hooked with the story. But it surpassed my expectations and I ended up reading all of the available chapters in one sitting! The story is very compelling. The more you read it, the more you want to dig deeper into the story and its characters. Eiichiro Oda is a great storyteller and it's very evident in his masterpiece.
The world of One Piece is vast, there are a lot of characters and it also tackles a lot of issues that can be likened to our issues in the real world. I'm talking about politics, racial discrimination, inequality, slavery, and war. It's not just all about entertainment. If anything, reading One Piece is like an eye-opening experience. There are a lot of lessons you can learn from each chapter.
Despite having tons of characters, most of them are quite memorable. Even the side characters get their own backstory.
But no one is as memorable as the lead character himself.
Monkey D. Luffy represents the innocence in all of us that have been lost as we reach adulthood. He looks at the world with so much anticipation and excitement, with no judgement or biases. He is not afraid to fight for what he thinks is right and values his friends like a family to him. He doesn't hold any grudges even to those who have wronged him (as long they apologize). He will always be my favorite.
I could go on and on about my love for One Piece but I'm only here to introduce it. So I encourage everyone (to those who haven't read it yet) to try reading one of the greatest mangas of all time. I promise you it is worth the read. You will laugh, get angry, cry and grow together with the characters.

grudge : 悪意 、恨み
前回の英語で漫画キングダムの紹介記事がすごく好評だったので、今回も英語教師のPearl先生に彼女の一番好きな漫画であるワンピースについて語ってもらいました。
私はこの記事を読んで日本語と英語での表現方法の違いが興味深いと思いました。例えば、ひとつなぎの大秘宝＝the titular treasure と表現しています。「titular：名ばかりの、有名無実の」という意味の単語です。こんな単語初めてみました。なかなか目にすることや使うことがないと思います。他にも意味の知らない単語がいくつかありました。皆さんは、いかがだったでしょうか？
このレベルの紹介文を英語でさっさと書けるようになりたいなと思う今日この頃です。来年のアメリカ留学までに英語のライティングの勉強も積んでいきたいと思います。
