【ちょっと高度な英語表現】 auspicious

　ちょっと高度な英語表現のコーナーです。今回の英語表現は，"auspicious" です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』（三省堂）には，「（機会・始まりなどが）幸先の良い，吉兆の，（日などが）縁起のよい」と記されています。

　もしかしたら，見覚えがあるなんていう人もいるのではないでしょうか。「令和」にかわるとき，海外のメディアは「令和」について，以下のように説明しています。

　The Guardianでは，

TV commentators struggled to offer a direct translation, but the two characters, Rei and Wa, taken from the eighth-century work Man’yoshu, the oldest anthology of Japanese poetry, can be read as “fortunate” or “auspicious”, and “peace” or “harmony”.

　BBCでは，

The term for the new era is made up of the two characters Rei and Wa. Rei can mean “commands” or “order”, as well as “auspicious” or “good”.   Wa often means “harmony”, and is also used in the Japanese word for “peace” – “hei-wa”.

と説明されました。令和の「令」の意味を説明する際に，"auspicious" が使われています。どちらも，"or" を用いて，意味を言い換えてくれています。The Guardian では，"fortunate"，BBC では，"good" です。

　尚，反意語は，"ominous" です。「不吉な，不気味な，胸騒ぎのする，悪い前兆となる」（『ウィズダム英和辞典』同上）という意味です。

　いずれも知っておくと，TOEIC や英検1級などで役に立つでしょう。
