【役立つ英語表現】「理解する」を英語で？

　「理解する」という英語表現はいろいろあります。まずすぐに思いつく代表例は，"understand" です。『オックスフォード英語類語辞典』で類義語を調べると，

"comprehend"
"catch on"
"take in"

などがでてきます。"COBILD Advanced Learner's Dictionary" で定義をみてみましょう。

understand: If you understand someone or understand what they are saying, you know what they mean.

catch on: If you catch on to something, you understand it, or realize that it is happening.

take in: If you take something in, you pay attention to it and understand it when you hear or read it.

　これらの定義から，どれも「見たり，聞いたり，読んだりすることによって得た情報を理解する」場合の用いることがわかります。

　他にも「理解する」という意味を表す語（句）はあります。"make out" や "figure out" はどうでしょうか。同じく "COBILD Advanced Learner's Dictionary" で見てみましょう。

make out: If you try to make something out, you try to understand it or decide whether or not it is true.

　"make out" は「判断がつかない」というときに用いることがわかります。"LDOCE" には，

to manage to see sb/ sth or read or hear sth

とあり，

I could just make out a figure in the darkness.

という例文が挙げられています。"LDOCE" の定義だけを見ると，"take in" と同じように感じますが，"COBUILD" にある "decide whether or not it is true" と合わせて考えると，「判断がつかない」というニュアンスで "make out" は使うと考えられます。  

figure out: If you figure out a solution to a problem or the reason for something, you succeed in solving it or understanding it.

　"figure out" は，「なんらかのも問題に対する解決策を見出す」という意味で「わかる，理解する」というときに使うといえます。"COBULD" には例文として，

It took them about one month to figure out how to start the equipment.

が挙げられています。尚，"LDOCE" の定義では，

to think about sb/sth until you understand them/it

とあります。上記に加え，「理解に時間がかかる」場合に用いられることがわかります。

例文として，

We could't figure her out.
I can't figure out how to do this.

が挙げられています。「彼女の心を理解する」ことも「使い方を理解する」ことも，同じ「問題」であり，解決策を見出すのには「長い時間」がかかるということでしょう。

　英英辞典を読み比べたり，類語辞典を使うと，同じような英語表現でも，相違点が見えてきて面白いですね。
