【英訳】侏儒の言葉18：暴力

本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Violence
Life is inevitably complicated, and there must be nothing other than violence that renders life less complicated. This is why those with the brain from the stone age do prefer homicide to debate.

Power, though, is consequently also a form of violence that has obtained a patent. Violence may be necessary all the time to control us humans, or it may not.

暴力
　人生は常に複雑である。複雑なる人生を簡単にするものは暴力よりほかにあるはずはない。このゆえに往往石器時代の脳髄しか持たぬ文明人は論争より殺人を愛するのである。
　しかしまた権力も畢竟パテントを得た暴力である。われわれ人間を支配するためにも、暴力は常に必要なのかもしれない。あるいはまた必要ではないのかもしれない。
